Recommend good Sound Blankets?

I wouldn't do a permanent installation with moving blankets unless I was on an extreme budget. They'll help considerably (maybe 5 - 10% over the untreated STC), but simply won't come close to products like Acoustiblok and fibre coupled with techniques like double-studded or otherwise sound-isolated construction.

Sorry for bumping such an old thread here. I was just Googling sound blankets and found your discussions.

I can add some in the field perspective on this matter, if anyone still is interested.

I am a production sound mixer/recordist for film and television. I do tv series and movies, as well as eng/efp. I have used movers blankets to deaden rooms for over 20 years and they DO work. They DO dry up live rooms. Considerably. In fact, last year I was doing sound on the independent movie Fireproof (shot for $500,000.00 and just passed $33 million gross boxoffice). We shot in a lot of noisy areas with small hard surfaces.

I used walls of standard weight movers blankets to deaden these rooms and the difference was night and day. I've got pictures somewhere I can post if anyone is interested. No rocket science, just covering three of the six reflective surfaces a standard room has to stop reflections. Hearing the sound in 5.1 surround, you would never know what the room really sounded like.

Now, movers blankets are NOT acoustic treatments. So if you are doing a studio, or a facility, use Sonex or the other treatments that are out there. But for those of us in the field with ever changing hard surfaces, heavy movers blankets are an inexpensive life saver!

I went to a local discount fabric store and bought 20 yards of heavy grey colored fabric to ship to Colorado for an interview video shoot in a photo studio very similar to mine. I tested in my studio with and without the fabric and it did make a difference. Nothing I could measure with a meter or of that professional nature but placing the fabric under the person being interviewed, as well as on stands near him, the sound was much better before and after. I monitored this test with headphones and the test is not scientific in any means but it did help in my particular conditions.
