For one, miniDV is not an analog source.

Second, what is the purpose of this transfer? I assume this footage is eventually to be edited into your documentary? So why on earth would you want to convert it to DVD first? You'd be converting it to a highly-compressed codec that is a pain to edit, and looks rather bad once re-converted into an editing codec.

Seems to me the best thing to do is to take the Hi8 and VHS sources and convert them to DV or DVCAM, using a camcorder or deck. Then, you have viable, digital masters of the analog footage that you can always go back to whenever you need.

By the way, in which format (or with which codec) are you editing this doc?
