Im going to be down converting a copy of everything I film onto DV tapes for added security. I figure even in the worst case scenario Ill at least have a SD version of my film.

Which panasonic DV tape would be best to use? I've read that Dry tapes are the way to go

thanks

Herzog, buy extra hdd's or go for the iomega rev drives, for example. Dual layer dvd's are also ok. A little bit more $, sure, but your film and work deserves to be kept in the best quality possible! If you're in the US, why not ask for a quote to use a dvcprohd deck for a day or 2, and master all the footage to tape?

Im going to archive everything onto two separate HDD's, also. I just wanted the tapes for added security. I like the idea of renting a dvcprohd deck though. Ill do this once all the footage is shot and archived onto HDD's.

The most important thing I've heard about tapes, is once you choose a type/brand stick with it.

I personally buy the Panasonic Master Quality Mini Dv Tapes. I've got one right next to me... it says 'Advanced Master'. The serial number is AY-DVM63AMQ. I've never had a problem with them and they are pretty neat looking for a mini DV (white and blue). I've never put another brand, or model of tape in my HVX. I just use these babies to make an SD backup of everything I do.

Make sure the dvcpro HD deck is compatible with 1080p24 or 720p24pn. I believe the 1400 is the first one to trully support all p modes. Maybe Barry can shime in with some tips on this...

Panasonic AY-DVM83MQ minidv tapes. Never put anything else in your HVX. The 83 in the name refers to length in minutes. Use 60s if you shoot shorter stuff.

To back up your films save them out in an uncompressed or low compression format and put them on DVD-R or any of the cheap and easy External HDs that have flooded the market over the last year.

I second the Panny professional master DV tapes choice, I use the 63's as the maunal says to not use the 60's.

Actually page 31 of the manual says to use AY-DVM63PQ or Y-DVM63AMQ and not to use 80s but it doesnt say anything about 83s. I didn't find any problems with the 83s I used.
