Recognise this footage?

The best way to view the footage is to rent or buy the DVD, The Invasion . I haven't seen it so I don't know if the clips shown are an actual part of it or not. I'm not sure what you mean by 'produced it'. Is he claiming to have worked on the actual film or did he replicate the shots to see if he could do it?
If the former, his name should be listed on IMDB.

Hope that helps.

Sorry I should've made myself clearer.

Basically we have a university task to produce a 30 second video clip. We have been given around 2 weeks to do this.

This is the video clip made by a co-student. The title is the same as a Hollwood film (and he has used the exact, cut, title from the film at the end), but that is where the connection ends.

He claims to have made all the 3D models and produced everything from scratch.

I think he has stolen footage and is lying - but I can't find where he has taken the footage from. I'm guessing a Japanese CGI film or a computer game cut scene...

Wow, that was made in 2 weeks? Impressive.

It's not familiar to me, but I'll pass it along to some of my more anime-loving friends.

I recognize it. Can't place the name, but I know it. The clip with the craft coming towards the camera kicking up dust is what I specifically recognize. And no, "he" didn't do it.

If "he" says "he" did that himself in 2 weeks, "he's" lying through "his" teeth. Ask how many passes and elements were used in just that part of the ship coming towards the camera, and what specifically were the order, and steps involved. And also ask what software. That will prove most interesting.

well, everything from "The Invasion" onwards at the end is very obviously taken directly from the trailer from the movie of the same title starring Nicole Kidman...

Does he claim to have created that as well?

that alone should be enough to prove shenanigans. I find it highly unlikely that someone capable of creating such stellar images in two weeks time would then need to use the title and credits from a hollywood film in order to complete their project.

later,
Jason

If he can create that in 2 weeks...

I have a QuestFEst entry I'd like to talk to him about

:D :D :D

I've had to remove the video due to bandwidth on my site I'm afraid.

He claims to have made it with:

Sony Vegas
Maya
V-Ray
Adobe Premier/After Effects

I brought up the video title "The Invasion" with him and despite initially denying it, he eventually owned up to stealing it (without actually saying so).

It has to be handed in at uni very soon and he seems to think he is going to give in all the 3D models too...

I sent him this image and only then did he give in. He still reckons everything else is original:

He says for that shot:

13 passes
6 for the background (mountains)
beauty pass (Smoke with shadow)
Softshadown (Smoke)
spec Shadow (Smoke)
Colour for Dust (smoke)

We'll, I'm sure if it's for university he'll have to prove he did the work. I'm sure he won't wont mind supplying mesh grabs of his shots, visual pass breakdowns ect.
It's pretty hard to fool a uni professor, so good luck to him.

Not even close. There were almost that many for the different dust layers alone. I could see 13 for just the main vehicle, maybe. He's full of it.

I don't understand why somebody would do that. I assume he's paying to take the class... not learning anything. Interesting.
