Recharging Batteries

I have a Panasonic CGA-D54 Li-ion and I would like to know about recharging. Do I have to let the battery totally discharge before recharging it again, or can I recharge it with the battery icon at say half full?

Panasonic states that the "new" technology in there lithium batteries makes it so that you do not have to wait until it is dead to recharge it. I would say that you probably should try, also, make sure you run it completely dead out of the box and then completely charge it up. I have the same battery you are referring to and I have never had problems. So, its more than likely ok, just try to fully expel them first.

THank you THoff, for dispelling misinformation.

Fortunately, the cameras that use the batteries will not allow you to completely discharge them. You'd have to build your own discharger, which would really be more of a lithium ion battery destroyer.

The discharge cycle was for Nickel Cadmium batteries and some others. Store lithium and lithium ion batteries at about a 40-70% charge in cool conditions. Put them on the charger every six months or so to keep them from becoming completely discharged.

i get some funny info from my minutes readout on the batt - sometimes a full charge will read 3 mins left (but the indicator hints at a full batt)

other times it wills ay there are 54 mins and the batt will go flat 3 mins later!

you can only really trust the graph - not the numbers - and its still a bit hit and miss

always carry a charged up spare!

Correct, the HVX doesn't provide an estimate of the battery time remaining, but it does give you the remaining recording capacity.
