recent commercial

Hey Goober,
I liked it, but the long version was a bit too long and the short version felt a bit too short. Apart from that I think the commercial was good. It looked good and was well edited.

What would a totally hot chick be doing pumping gas in the middle of hicksville? Only a matter of time before she get's abducted by some freak.

She was nice to look at though.

Changes I would have recommended: (had I been consulted in advance !! Sheesh:))

It's a shirt ad, but there's not enough emphasis on the shirt. Apparently this guy can just get right up in a girls grill and she completely loses all voluntary control of herself and just jumps in his car- gasoline pump still going and everything. Ok.. now WHY? Is it because:
A) she's a nympho
B) he's wearing Axe?
C) he's got a gun (which you don't see) pointed at her
or
D)he's wearing one super duper, space truckin mofo of a badass shirt that makes women (see above)

Yes that was implied... but just a quick camera shot from her point of view of his chest, slightly panning up to imply she had been checking his crotch but the great fit of that shirt pulled her attention up to his chest. Then when their eyes met there should have been a slight jolt on her part to imply she'd been lost in a trance and suddenly realized she was completely unabashedly eyeballing this dude in a come-do-me way and at this point there was no going back, it was on!

That would have tied it all together. You built a great scenario for all this, now go back and reshoot it all. Make checks payable to Eric Piercey for consultation.

Nice camera work, good music, pretty people. The fade to white on the end of the 1 min version is way too long. You could have put more into the product in this time (or at least the girl!!)

Looks pretty good! Nice shots and overall, real good work. I'm not sure how well it sells the shirt, though. I like the concept, but I didn't think too well about the shirt by the end (but it could be the shirt and not your ad  ). The shirts just looked weird with the b+w and color graphics. Maybe I'd do the whole shirt in color? Minor point. Other thing was the music was ok - light. But it might be nice to go the extra mile and score a track specifically to the piece, hitting the "moments". Plus when he hits the country, I wanted to hear that steel geetar, ya know? Felt a little too So-cal for that scene.

Otherwise, it looked great, so could you share the tech specs please?

Camera?
Adapter, lenses?
Edit?

ThnX!

It was shot on DVX100a with homemade version of the M2, canon Fd lenses, edited in Priemere 2.0

Yeh I agree scoring would have been better and roto'ing the whole shirt would have been better, but we had 100 dollars to work with, so we went with what we had. The single color of the logos was much easier to key a motion matte for than to roto the whole shirt.

Thanks,

No doubt. I totally understand. It's very well done overall and shows you'd definitly be able to put a bigger budget to good use. The bridge shot is gorgeous, btw. Keep on rockin. Oh, that homemade M2 works pretty darn good! You're braver than me.

Dude, I loved it. I watched the long version. It sold the feeling you get from wearing the shirt (or what we'd like to happent) and that's the best kind of advertising. The judicious use of color was great. I would tighten the rack focus ending and cut to the logo WAAAYYY faster - stick it over the rack focus at the end to maximise your onscreen logo time.

Great work, looked like 35mm to me. (And unlike most here, I have actually shot commercials in 35mm). This is one of the first times I have really seen the M2 put to great use.

Why does everyone think that 1/2" of DOF is a perfect film look? Your DOP is great, and your concept is very strong and well executed.

Seems to me you haven't made the rounds enough to know how many people work/have worked with 35mm on this site.

There's plenty of people around here that work in the industry. The big one.

Great commercial and good quality with the homemade M2! Nice and sharp. That was well said RC. I second that.

Overall, it had a great look to it. The ending is way too slow, as was mentioned, and I would have liked to see the whole shirt in color as well, but I understand the constraints.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I really appreciate it.

I dont know if anyone lives in the Nashville area, but Monday March 19th there is a film night at cafe coco for local filmmakers. Me and My DP will have some of our shorts and commericals and music videos there that night. My DP also directs and will have some of his work in it as well, which I DP'd on. So long story short, we'd like to see you there and share a beer if possible.
