So I did a little test to see what you can acheive by adding a Rec.709 to LOG overlay onto some DSLR footage, then adding a LUT in a second adjustment layer.
Personally I like how it turned out. The LUT didn't seem as harsh as apposed to slapping a Rec.709 LUT directly onto the footage, almost completely crushing the blacks.
