FS7: Rec 2020?

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance, but looking at the rumoured features for the FS7 mk11 (or whatever it'll be called) I noticed that it will have the ability to record with REC2020.

Now, am I right in thinking that a firmware update could allow existing FS7 users to shoot for REC2020 as the SGamut3 profile records a wider gamut than REC2020?

Cheers.

Like the F5 the FS7 could shoot in rec2020 and is surely only a firmware update away but whether they choose to give it to use is another question. Maybe a paid update, if so I'd skip it as there's no technical reason for me to have it. The likelihood of rec2020 of having any impact on my deliverables is years away.

Edit.

I got it wrong the F5 does not have rec2020 so the FS7 MkII could conceivably have the wider gamut CFA of the F55 sensor.

Or just shoot in log and apply a rec2020 lut afterwards?

log is about as far away from 2020 as you can possiably get...

try to imageine you eyes can see somewhere in the region of 16-20 stops, and a good camera captures 12-14 stops, log turns that into 7.5 stops by compressing the dynamic range into a display refered range, ie; it can be seen on a 7.5 stop display.... that's what log is, a compression of the dynamic range to fit a camera's dynamic range into a range than a 709 display can reproduce

now 2020 is 25+ stops, more than the eye can see without our iris's ramping up and down... and there's no screens other than two that are in Dolby's develpment lab that can come close to displaying 2020 anyway, so really 2020 is all about maintaining widest range captured while not compressing the dynamic range.

to make a LUT that expands the log's compressed dynamic range to the thoritical 2020 by using crappy maths, and then re-compress the dynamic range to get the 2020 back to a display refered image seems kinda counter productive...

yea, shooting to 2020 is going to cuase some log loveing heads to explode i think ;-)

Wow. Never thought a spec for the FS7 II would cause so much confusion about rec.2020 in the forums.
Sgamut3 is a wider gamut than rec.2020. If you own an FS7, you can shoot in Sgamut3 and apply a transform later to finish in rec.2020. The new feature in FS7 II allows you to save you that step and just record it in camera.

Rec.2020 has nothing to do with dynamic range. You can shoot rec.2020 with 7 stops. You can shoot it with 20 stops. Greater dynamic range helps with rec.2020 because in order to hit the full color of 2020 you need greater luminosity that the standard SDR 7-8 stops.

Thanks, S. I've been shooting S-gamut3.Cine/S-log3 on my FS7 almost exclusively, and using RCM in Resolve transforming to P3-DCI/ST.2084 for HDR10 grading (I use P3-DCI and not Rec. 2020 colorspace, as my Samsung SUHD KS8000 covers 96% of the former and much less of the latter - even though for a naked eye, there is no difference in output colors between them). Do you recommend sticking to P3-DCI on output, or using Rec.2020 and then perhaps switch from Cine to the full S-Gamut3 on shooting S-log3? TIA,

Piotr

Like REC709, REC2020 is a DISPLAY referenced standard. It defines color gamut, white point, and luminance target value ranges for monitors and TV's. The boundaries of the gamut are set wider than current display technologies can typically reproduce to leave room for future developments. It is only in the last few years that displays capable of exceeding REC709 gamut have become commonly available.
If one shoots in log color spaces, one can grade and deliver to any color space standard. You need a reference monitor calibrated for the delivery format. That is a different issue from the native color gamut of the camera sensor. Color saturation and color discrimination are a product of the sensor color filter array. A camera designed to shoot deeper color would have less efficient more saturated color filters. Everything else being equal, a deep color filter array will cost you a stop of light sensitivity.

Just because the FS7 can shoot in SGamut3 or SGamut3.cine it does not guarantee that the camera is capable of filling those gamuts also these gamuts are not delivery gamuts. The F5 and FS7 have rec709 CFAs while only the F55 has the wide gamut CFAs.

For Sony to offer the delivery colourspace rec2020 it has to be certain it meets the requirements of the spec I.e the sensor is capable of filling up the gamut of rec2020. My best guess is that either the FS7II has a new sensor with wide gamut CFAs or it is using the F55 sensor. If it's the latter and Donny is right that global shutter is built into the sensor the FS7II may also have a global shutter.
