reason to deinterlace footage?

Is this for removing pulldown manually or something? There are filters to do this, but not sure exactly why one would need to deinterlace. Can someone explain reasons for doing that. I mean if you deinterlace won't you get 60 frames of footage, what do you do with that after?

You could deinterlace if your final delivery is for the web, and you didn't/couldn't shoot progressive. Keeps your footage and graphics from having ugly stairstepping.
