RealStream Andromeda

Re: RealStream Andromeda

I have very little to say accept everyone looking to void a warranty and corrupt there camera should listen to Johns advice. I would MOD my xbox or tivo but would never mess with the DVX ;)

I totally agree. But I still want to see some clips!!

Re: RealStream Andromeda

I shot an email over to Juan and you don't have to have the mod box connected to a laptop. You can hookup a USB drive to a battery, which is much more practical than lugging around a laptop. Should be interesting to see where this develops.

Re: RealStream Andromeda

THis is serious. It's the result from one year of hardwork and research, and it's still in beta. But if Juan get this figured out, the DVX WILL BE the 24p HD camera for less than 5000 bucks. It's not for everybody, I think, If you work with your DVX for events I'd rather get a second one (used, and preferrably the 100 model - since all the circuitry is bypassed) and mess with that. But it could be a HUGE breaktrough in the Indy digital cinema world. Just as any homemade solution that might appear in a near future. it would work just like a Film Camera: Shoot "Blind", Take it home later for developing, edit offline, etc... and almost as good as, but for a tiny fraction of the cost. I, for one am very excited with it.

Re: RealStream Andromeda

You could also do real overcranking with this thing! You would need a hard drive which could handle the datarate (or you could just move down to 4:2:2 which isn't bad at all) but it's all quite possible! No more crappy slomo :D

Re: RealStream Andromeda

>Sounds really good but I don't know if I want to void the waranty on my DVX. Now if it only cost like 50 bucks I might reconsider.

For those who are concerned with the price, check out
http://www.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/cameras/viper/

per pixel you are recieving the same data quality from andromeda as you would the viper.

how much does this cost?
its a little more than $50...

You obviously have no idea how much data rates like this cost.
We will be lucky if it is under $10,000.

But, for those of us who are actually professionals...that much money will be well spent.

Re: RealStream Andromeda

Don't do that to us man, I am drewling over my keyboard, and apple white keyboards are a pain to clean... ;)

It's a very interesting product, it's not a must have, and truly, for everybody that will be doing run and gun, it's not worth it. A lot of professionals do that, so I wouldn't say it's a product for every professional out there, but this I can say:

If you plan on doing commercials, short films or a feature, it could be a good investment, and could prove the DVX to be even more then we thought. Also, from the images posted so far, the Andromeda Image seems so clean and grainless that I'm already very impressed.

Re: RealStream Andromeda

Shaw-
I'm trying to work out how the Andromeda will give us true slow mo. Can you walk us thru it?

I know the system only does Uncompressed so 4:2:2 seems like would only be possible to apply to the uncompressed footage later on in post.

Also are you talking about over cranking in progressive or interlaced? And what about play back (Progressive or Interlaced?)

Correct me if Im wrong but I really dont believe that your going to get any higher frame rates then 60i or 30P with the Andromeda. Frame rate is a function of the camera's CCDs and not a issue of the quality of your recording medium (ie. uncompressed v.s. MiniDV). Where are you getting this info?

Re: RealStream Andromeda

Yeah, i don't get it either. It should give us the exact same frame rate that the camera is capable of natively. Now I know that the Andromeda data bypasses in-camera processing, but isn't the frame rate controlled at the CCD level?

Re: RealStream Andromeda

Brett: That was actually just an assumption. You are quite right - framerate is a function of the CCDs not recording medium. I just assumed (perhaps quite wrongly) that the CCDs were probably capable of a higher frame rate than 30p.

What do you mean the circuity is bypassed? Vs. the DVX100a? Wouldn't this only matter if you were going to use Andromeda (and even then I'm not exactly sure what you mean.)

Re: RealStream Andromeda

I am excited by this product's potential also. But I have a delicate question: Have any of you personally seen Andromeda in action? Met the developers? Sometimes when something sounds almost too good to be true...

Thanks,

Re: RealStream Andromeda

Oh this is definitely for real. The whole process started over at DVinfo. The whole process from idea to reality is documented over there. No, worries about the real part :D. Just worry about the price and warranty void!

Re: RealStream Andromeda

Is there any way to get higher frame rates out of the DVX? Maybe by internal modification like this?

Re: RealStream Andromeda

It's an interesting idea; but after all is said and done our little $4000.00 camcorder will be packaged at $15,000 Plus Dollars. Like putting a spoiler on a Datsun. I've made it a rule of thumb NOT to spend more on any accesory that is worth more than the camera.

:P ::) :o

Re: RealStream Andromeda

He says it'll cost less than a new DVX. According to his forum the Andromeda system should be out this summer.

But by the time it comes out there may be a new DVX model out.
