Really Great 5DMK3 vs D800 Review

Too bad the majority of the D800's lenses turn the focus wheel in the opposite direction! I just can't (or want to) go against years of muscle memory.

I was a press photographer way back in the early 1970s when Nikon owned it and Canon was a bit player. IIRC it was Canon that decided to go against the existing standard and change the direction their lenses turned for focus. It was nothing more or less than a marketing ploy -- making the lenses different sold more Canon lenses. What you are used to then is in fact the "opposite direction". If that's bugging you, at least you know it's not Nikon's fault.

Great review... the DR on the Nikon really does look nice (stills and video). Hopefully they can sort the aliasing/moire on the next model.

Any views on the white balance from Nikon shooters?

Interesting. I am going off of the broadcast video standard where Fuji & Canon lenses turn in a certain direction. I have no say about still lens direction but we are trying to use these still cameras/lenses now for video use. I do not want to say Nikon is wrong but that their choice will prohibit me from buying their equipment with regards to the video space.

I had already seen some of his earlier reviews, but this is the best one so far - lots of very useful info in there
but hasn't he heard about Flaat yet? let me reach for my spamgun...

This is a problem, indeed, but workarounds have been there for a long time - many of today's follow focus designs allow you to reverse the rotation direction.

Very good point. I do not know much about FF. Are there any that are quick and easy to setup while being compact? Do they need rails...?

Like what? Very few actually change the direction of lens focus without changing to opposite side of the rails.

I think most of them can do that by changing position from "closer than the gear" to "farther than the gear"
