Really Choppy Playback on TV

I just got back from a four month documentary shoot. Sat down to screen tapes with my team using my TV. the camera was connected using new RCA cable. The footage looks terrible, it's choppy, looks like a frames are being dropped. All the footage was filmed in 24p mode (not advanced 24p). Starting to wonder if the DVX is worth it as the choppy playback coupled with hundreds of timcode breaks has made post a nightmare..... Thanks for any input!

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

Does this happen to all your tapes when you playback? Or is it just one tape in particular? "I just got back from a four month shoot." where did exactally did you go? Just hope it wasn't anywhere humid or dusty.

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

thanks so much for geting back to me. I was in Mauritius, an island in the indian ocean. It was hot and at times humid, but not rainforest humid. It happens with all our tapes. However when I played them back on a PAL TV everything looked fine. I've heard that it might have to do with the pull-down which i have only a basic understanding of. Thanks again for getting back to me. have 40 hours of footage so I'm rather nervous about all this.

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

A foolish question, but is the camera a PAL, as you say it played back fine on a PAL TV.

Are you now viewing on an NTSC TV (in the States)?

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

Definitly sounds like a PAL camera, as NTSC played on a PAL TV will display those types of results. And heck, if it plays back fine on PAL then that should tell you right there. Look in the scene file settings, make sure that it actually says 24p and not 25p.

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

Thanks for all the input. The camera is NTSC for sure, it's 24p. Does anybody think this issue has to do with the pull down??

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

If it's NTSC, you should not be able to "play back on a PAL TV [and] everything looked fine".

It doesn't work like that.

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

I don't get it. It looks fine on my computer via FCP, looks fine in camera and on a PAL TV, but terrible on NTSC. Looks like frames are being dropped. Do you think my editing software need to get rid of the pull-down. thanks!

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

This may throw a wrench is this topic - I live in PAL world and have 2 PAL tv's. My NTSC camera (purchased in the US last Oct.) plays video back perfectly on the PAL tv's. Screwy, huh? Is it possible that some tv's are able to recognize both signals?

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

Yes it is. I have two S-VHS-videos and a videoprojektor for both PAL abd NTSC

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

Well, if it plays back on a PAL system, edit it as PAL using PAL editing software.

Then convert to NTSC if thats what you need.

Simple.

(When will the French switch to PAL?)

Last time I needed something like that, I had to shell out $700 Canadian for a crappy Samsung VCR that would do the same.

However, I AM going to get the Panasonic DV deck (http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...d=14596&modelNo=AG-DV2500&surfModel=AG-DV2500) cuz it plays both NTSC and PAL, plus I don't want to wreck my DVX with capturing and I am getting tired of dropped frames when I capture footage through my old Canon Optura.

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

OK...so I know for sure it's not a PAL camera. I actually got the footage to play normaly on my NTSC TV. To do so I brought footage into FCP from a a few of my tapes and than output the footage to a new DV tape. When I played this tape on my TV everything looked fine, but again when I paly the master tapes via S-Video or RCA cables it looks like it's dropping frames and very choppy. I don't get it. Has anybody had this problem??? Thanks, B

Re: Really Choppy Playback on TV

Try doing a pass through from FCP, firewire to the DVX, out to the TV via a cable.

You can eliminate, or zero in if the heads are the problem.

In otherwords, no tape in the camera.
