Really beginning to hate Avid...

Here's whole slew of problems for anyone to tackle:

Problem #1:
1) During capturing, the message "Delay write failed" appeared at the bottom of the screen with a yellow triagnle and exclmation point. It resurfaces every few minutes - how do I get rid of it/the problem?

2) Shortly after the above message appeared, another message ("Exception: unidentifiable error has occured") appeared, and it now occurs everytime I try to capture ANY clip on ANY tape. HELP!

Problem #2:
Sometimes the system gets confused between drop vs non-drop frames as I capture raw footage and is "expecting a drop-frame tape". I tried making changes in both the "General" and "Deck preferences" bins, but to no avail. I even tried to change the colon/semi-colon on the time code in the capture screen. The message seems to want me to "insert the correct non-drop-frame tape" instead of making changes in Avid. (???) All I want to do is capture!

Problem #3: Where is the "Power Option" control panel?

Thank you; this computer illiterate little man feels his brain slowly melting...

Re: Really beginning to hate Avid...

DO you have a Mojo or not? If so, make sure it is not on the same FireWire bus as any external drives.

Are you using external drives? How fast are they? Are they formated at NTFS?

In theh control panel in alphabetical order - "Power Options"

When capturing a tape, do not automatically enter a tape name when requested. Becuase tapes sometimesn have both types of timecodes, once one is named, it will ALWAYS and FOREVER be marked as drop and non drop. Make sure your default preference for logging is set to drop or non drop depending on whch one you will encounter most of the time.

ONce you get to the area on the tape that you want to capture, click on TAPE NAME and give it one at that time.

Re: Really beginning to hate Avid...

1) I do not have Mojo...
2) The ext HD speed is 7200 (connected via Firewire) and is formatted as
NTFS.
3) I will look in the control panel for "Power Options".
4) I guess the error messages are for the Avid company to figure out...? ;)

Thank you for the above info!! I will reinsert the tapes and this time not give them a name, unless of course the Avid can somehow recognize the tapes and by default (and memory) assign the orginal "name"...then am I out of luck? I thought I would be able to switch the settings from drop to non-drop as needed, but are you saying that the whole tape is now "contaminated" with a specific name and therefore will always be recognized as drop or non-drop? And does that mean that I will never be able to capture the footage? I will try to rename the tape (if possible) at the appropriate problem area...or...what if I copied the footage to another tape on a player that was running at the appropriate/opposite frame-rate?

Re: Really beginning to hate Avid...

Also make sure that the camera and the hard drive are not on the same FireWire bus. That may also cause the issues you are seeing. I use a third party PCI FireWire card for the hard drive(s) and plug the camera straight into the native Firewire connection on the motherboard.

YOu need to give them the tapes a name, what I suggested was that you only give it a name once you are in the part of the tape you want to capture - this way you are assured as to the proper timecode type for that capture. If for whatever reason there actually IS two different timecode types on the tape, then create two tape names - 001D for drop frame and 001N for non drop. Select whichever one is appropriate for the capture.

It is necesary to keep unique timecode types per tape as the metadata needs to be preserved for EDL creation down stream if ever needed.
