GH2 Really bad quality in low light

Hi,

I'm having serious problems with compression artifacts recording in all modes with my GH2 (PAL model). I must be doing something wrong as all the tests say, low light performance has improved a lot. I'm using shutter speed 1/60 and the 20mm Pancake with f-stops from 1.7 to 4.0 and ISO 800, all with the same quality problems. Also 1080@24p, 1080@50i and 720@50p had roughly the same quality. What should I check in my camera settings?

The attached image is part of a still frame grabbed from the MTS exported as PNG, so it's the original quality. The effect I'm talking about is the left-hand side of the image where the wall get's darker where you see the banding. This is even more obvious in the moving images when the compression patterns move and are also visible on the door behind the girl. Is this as good as it gets or are there things that one can tweak (apart from the lighting, of course)?

Oh, I can't seem to add the PNG (635k) without the site converting it to jpg, so the post doesn't make much sense but the FAQ doesn't say what the file size limit is. Please tell me (more or less newbie) what I can do so this makes sense.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

I loathe the banding problem however what I am seeing there does not appear to be it. The banding generally comes off a light soruce and its blue and very prominent. I cannot even see what your pointing out in that pic.. but I will say u should typically eb shooting in 1/50 for 25fps not 1/60th.

Here is one thing to try.. change your iso. Sensors are reknown for liking some iso and loathing others. Sometimes even a higher iso will produce better results. give that a go and yes please post a higher rez image cause i have no idea what your complaining about.

GH2 brings 8-bit to its knees. Not much more to it really. Live with it, or buy a camera with a lower resolution soft image that doesn't "expose" the limits of 8-bit like GH2/AF100 does (Canon).

Sometimes even a higher iso will produce better results.

High ISO makes the banding worse. OP, may wanna check out this thread.
