REAL TIME EFFECTS...

Can someone explain real time effects to me. I just got done reading that chapter in the FCP manual and it doesn't quite make sense to me because I have a fast G5 machine, and the book states that the majority of FCP effects playback in real time. However, everytime I add an effect to my timeline I always get the red render bar. Now it only takes literally a couple of seconds if that to render. Am I missing something here? I know how to playback an effect in slow motion to see if I am going to like it not but that is not real time.

Re: REAL TIME EFFECTS...

Make sure your sequence's quality setting is at RT Unlimited to get the most realtime playback. Note that image quality and frame rate can suffer, but at least you get to see how your effects look without rendering.

Re: REAL TIME EFFECTS...

when you say picture quality and frame rate suffers....does that mean just for playback or does that apply to outputting video as well?

Re: REAL TIME EFFECTS...

When you output your video (export, print to tape, etc.) you ALWAYS need to render. Hence, unlimited RT is for preview only (i.e. playback within FCP), not for final output.
