I'm about to get into HD editing and I must upgrade this five year old desktop. I'm pretty much set on going Mac Pro despite being a PC fanboi. I have a budget of about $5,000, so I'd like to know what are some "must-haves" for HD editing. For instance, 4GB of RAM enough or do I need 8 or 16GB? How much hard disk space should I allot?

More importantly, I've been told by a couple peeps that I need to invest in an HD monitor, such as the Matrox MXO, to get perfect color and resolution replication for final output. Crazy or true? Is there another option?

All opinions and suggestions welcome.

2.66 MacPro Quad with 4 Gbs of RAM should be fine.

Populate the internal drives with Hitachi SATA drives from zipzoomfly.com.

X1900 video card.

Matrox MXO is not a HD monitor. It is an output box.

The MXO output to an Apple 23" display is what gets you broadcast color, and the ability to output to tape.
