Re: Zoom H4N Stereo Recording and Adobe Premiere CS5.5 - Map Left Channel to Mono

Re: Zoom H4N Stereo Recording and Adobe Premiere CS5.5 - Map Left Channel to Mono

In Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 (or Adobe Audition), how can I take a Stereo recording (MP3) and use only the LEFT channel for BOTH channels?

In this case I did an engagement video of the Bride and Groom. Each were talking about themselves on camera one at a time (Bride = LEFT-CHANNEL, Groom = RIGHT-CHANNEL).

However the Bride who was off camera had her lavalier mic on still, so you could hear her whispering as the Groom was talking. Therefore I had to use Premiere Pro to turn off the RIGHT channel in order to eliminate the whispers from the Bride. But in doing this I also have no audio coming from the RIGHT channel.

So how can I take the Stereo LEFT-CHANNEL and map it to the RIGHT-SPEAKER as well?

In your audio effects in Premiere, use either Fill Left or Fill Right. Drag the effect over and voila! Fill Left means fill from the left channel.

I'll usually copy and paste the audio into a corresponding track below the one that already exists, and then use a "swap channels" effect - same cat, different way to skin it

Duplicating channels like that is not the way to go. There can be slight shifts in the audio clips that can cause phase cancellation. When working with only one channel from a two-channel recording, delete the channel you don't want and then use either a "pan" control or, as in the case of Premiere, the "fill" effect.

Your stereo audio can be split in to right and left channel entities. These can be then dropped into the audio track area, and are 'mono'. The 'master channel' is stereo, and the 'mono' tracks can be panned to left or right, but the default is center.

In Premiere (CS5), select the 'stereo' audio clip in the 'project window',

Then select the menu item.

Clip->Audio Options->Breakout to Mono

Two new clips will appear in the project window, labeled "OriginalName.wav left", and "OriginalName.wav right". (for example...).

These will be mono channels, of the left and right original stereo media.

The 'mono' clip dropped into a sequence track will be 'panned' center. Use the "Audio Mixer" control panel to change if required.
