Re: Torn - 30 minute short

I just got done watching your film, and I must say that I am quite impressed.  The story was very well written, a little sad at the end, but hey what are you gonna do?  I liked the way that you used the teacher to narrate the story.  The camera work was also very well done, although I think there could have been maybe a couple of wide establishing shots.  The in your face camera work was very tight and very professional.  Your actors were also really tallented, something you don't always see.  The two main characters were definatly the best, but some of the others did quite well also.
I do have a couple of gripes however.  First, and this is probably the biggest problem that I saw witht he film, everyone was short and fat.  It was like you shot it 16:9 and instead of cropping for 2.35:1 you just squished it.  This was very distracting to me, as everybody in your film probably gained like 50 lbs through this process.  The only other thing I can think of is the color correction.  I don't know if it was the compression or if it really looked like this, but I notice a lot of posterization, especially in skin tones.  Especially on those skin tones that were overexposed and had a spot of red in them.  I think that i might tone down the dramatic color correction if for anything to get rid of some of that posterization.  YOu might also try finding other ways of blooming your highlights as I think that may be the main cause of your posterizing problems.

Other than that, everything looked really good.  Congratulations, you obviously spent many long hours on this.

Re: Torn - 30 minute short

Hey man, great stuff very inspiring. Just a couple of notes: be sure that when your watching your shot through the finder that you can see everything! Some shots were underexposed. I know it was probably difficult because you were shooting at night YOU DID VERY PERFECT in some scenes. I.E. the driving at night in the rain, beautiful! Also for the drama. It was mostly good. I am an actor, so on many of these I'm gritting my teeth. Get in touch with your local acting community. Find a good acting teacher, ask him/her if they would like to come out and help coach on set. The results are dramatic!!!!!!! Other than that, frikin awesome! Keep it up!!!!

I was also impressed. Very professional. Clearly a lot of love and work went into it. There were some great images. The dripping faucet/blood effect, for example. I look forward to your next effort.

d/l at 83KB/sec? Could be some others trying to get it now too, I'll try again later.
Maybe you could just post some short clips?

Re: Torn - 30 minute short

I don't know what you did in post, but the glowing/bloom effect got really annoying as it made it look unrealistic. The aspect ratio also looked squashed. I'm going to finish the rest of the video later.

Re: Torn - 30 minute short

It took a while to download, but I did eventually get to look at your film. It's really great stuff for a school project, very professional approach to most of your shots with a combination of tight and pulled-out angles of the same action as well as your dolly moves, etc. Your shot compositions were perfect in many cases. Very impressive.

I thought that the color correction (or use of Magic Bullet or similar filters) was a bit too strong for my taste because you see so much of it these days, but I understand that it can be too tempting not to use.

In the end, I thought that it was a great piece of work, and I think that you'll do some killer stuff in the future. Great job.
