Re: Sennheiser SKP100 + Shure SM58 or Sennheiser SKM835?

Re: Sennheiser SKP100 + Shure SM58 or Sennheiser SKM835?

Which should I go for?

1) Sennheiser SKP100 + Shure SM58
OR
2) Sennheiser SKM835

Usage would be for handheld speeches. But with other considerations in mind which solution would you go for?

NOTE: I have the Sennheiser G3 receiver already so I just need to add a wireless mic.

I vote for 3) Sennheiser SKP100 + Electro-Voice RE50N/D-B.

The two mics you have listed are cardioid patterns. This will only work well if the speaker understands that he/she has to point the mic at their mouth and not move out of the pattern, and that they have to maintain a consistent distance from the mic (proximity effect). Most people giving a speech are far more interested in the content, than the mic. As they should be.

So I'm suggesting an omni pattern mic with no handling noise at all, that is immune to almost everything from plosives to gale force winds. The standard go-to mic for U. S. video news organizations. Sounds great, easy to use, cheap-ish, available used, and I'm told that in a pinch it'll double for a hammer. But I haven't tried that with mine yet.

I use an SKP300 (same thing but with phantom power capability) with an SM58 and it works perfectly fine for handheld speech. I use it at schools for assemblies indoor and outdoor and it performs like a champ. Having the speaker keep the mic close to their mouth isn't that big of a deal. I have kids that are 5 years old that can figure out if they need to bring the mic closer to their mouth or not as long as their can hear themselves on the speakers. I also really love the versatility of the SKP300 because I can use pretty much any microphone out there if I decide that the SM58 is not enough.

If it's integrated with a PA (live sound), either/or would work good.
If direct to camera or audio recorder only, a dynamic omni directional reporter's mic. (EV RE50 or Senn. MD42 for instance)

Another vote for the re50nd. These mics are made to be used outdoors in adverse conditions at which they excel. The nd version has a somewhat hotter output fo a few bucks more than the standard version.

A note of caution, if the sm58, the re50, or most any dynamic mic is directly input into the typical cheapie recorder like a zoom or Tascam, the results will likely be disappointing. IMHO, none of the dynamic mics like this have a hot enough output when coupled with the notoriously weak preamps in the cheaper recorders. Add a mixer and you're golden. Use a better recorder like a dr680 and you're fine. Running these dynamics directly to the typical video cam works fine also. I haven't tested the gain structure using a Senn wireless kit.

I do a fair number of events where handheld radios are handed out to the audience - often passed along rows of seats, then some eat the mic, and other hold it down near their knees. Most people do aim fairly well at their heads, so my choice here would be the Sennheiser 835 - there is plenty of gain, distance and quiet speakers don't seem to be a problem. The 845 hyper also worked pretty well, improving the distance problem, but making the waving around prone people worse. The plug in transmitters I have never liked much to give to random people, because the extra weight in the base often means the mic slips down their loose grip, and they end up holding the mic by the windshield basket, which makes them sound pretty horrible - especially SM58s. Omnis have a place with professionals who appreciate the importance of getting an omni close in, but ordinary people do odd things, and a too distance omni hears so much it shouldn't!

The 835 also seems to be quite useful if people lay them down on a flat surface - if pointing the right way, they hear quite a bit, and don't sound too coloured.

Like other have said an RE50 is best for general stick mic use but an SM58 or 835 would be better for PA use.

I am a big fan of the sennheiser mics and have a few 845 hyper cardioids as they look nicer in vision for TV work and have a nicer sound to me but the SM58 is a good general purpose dynamic that is tried and tested, I also have some 835's and a radio stick with an 835 capsule but it tends to be used for presenters who know how to use a cardioid mic.

I also have some beyer M58's and they are the omni dynamic mic of choice for the BBC as they have a long body and can be easier to hold than the RE50 with a SKP on the end.

Bruce,

What are you recording to, that was my point. Using G2 systems, and recording a dynamic to a video cam has been no issue for me. Do you know how well it works going to a Zooom for example?

Nope. Just recording directly to videocam. Now through MixPre-D. Works well with either of those. Direct to a Zoom? No idea, sorry.

Definatly *NOT* the Shure SM58 - that's really a stage vocal mic.

The SKM 835 is a good all-rounder, but I would go for the SKP 100 with an MD62 (or the Beyer M58 or the EV reporter mic.).
