Re: Odyssey 7Q // Sony Raw

Does the Odyssey 7Q record Sony Raw directly or must it always transcode it into an intermediate codec?

Odyssey records in DNG raw or Prores format. No Sony Raw, it converts it on the fly.

The format of Sony RAW that comes out of the FS5/7/700 cameras is not used anywhere else. It is not a format that is readable in any post systemm. Sony's own RAW recorder solution transforms the FSRAW format into the RAW format used on the F5/F55 cameras. This is why we transform the Sony FSRAW into CinemaDNG, or we process it into video to record it in Apple ProRes.

Is there a name for the RAW format used on the F5/F55? I downloaded sample footage of a "RAW" from the F55 so I'm assuming it is this format you speak of? It seems to run really well in Davinci Resolve 12.5 on my machine.

Sony RAW from the F5/F55 is different from the FS RAW output from the FS5/FS7/FS700. As I stated previously, there is nothing that records in this format and there is no commercial post program that reads it. Even the Sony recorder converts the FS RAW to the RAW format used by the F5/F55.

There are other cameras like this, but most are industrial devices. An example is the IO Industries Flare 2K and 4K cameras. We convert that RAW signal to CinemaDNG as well.
