Re: Nikon D4 Questions

Re: Nikon D4 Questions

1) What is the battery life for the Nikon D4 when using it for video?
2) Can you change White Balance while recording video?
3) Can you make ISO, Shutter and Aperture adjustments while recording video?
4) Can you use magnification while recording video?

Ok, so on my D4:

1. I use 1-2 bars shooting half a day. Overall I'm pleased with the battery life. Full day on a single battery - not bad!
2. Yes, you can change white balance while recording, although I'm not sure why you'd want to. If you're run-and-gun and go from inside to outside, I'd just keep it on AUTO WB.
3. Yes, you can make changes to ISO, shutter, and iris adjustments while recording.
4. No, magnification did not work for me while recording. That's what the external monitor and/or viewfinder is for (I use Kinotehnik EVF as well as 7 inch LILLIPUT monitor for AC/focus puller).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your answer!

Well with respect to changing white balance, I believe that color affects the way we tell stories. It affects the mood and feel. So dialing in our white balance using kelvins as we shoot is so important. It's the same reason why Picasso or Van Gogh don't use an "auto brush" when they create paintings.

Convenience is not art.

You can make changes to WB, ISO, shutter and Iris but they will be all noticeable. They are incremental not seamless. I personally wouldn't use AUTO WB as the temp and therefore the look could change during a shot. Going from inside to outside you could change the WB but as I said you would see it.
As an aside if you have wide enough lenses or enough space do explore the 2.7 crop mode. That is the best quality out of the D4 by far.
FWIW this was shot in that mode:

Best wishes.
