Re: Nikon D4 in 2.7x Crop Mode with Micro 4/3 lenses

Re: Nikon D4 in 2.7x Crop Mode with Micro 4/3 lenses

So in 2.7x crop mode, does that mean we can use Micro 4/3 lenses without any vignetting?

No you can't, because the focal flange distance is shorter on micro 4/3rds than on Nikon F-mount. You would need to physically mount the micro 4/3rds lenses inside the body of the D4.

You would also have no way of controlling the aperture on the lens, and you would lose AF and IS.

On the flipside, this camera will work brilliantly with Nikon's range of legacy lenses as well as all their current lenses. Even DX lenses will mount and work properly (and if it's anything like previous FX cameras, it will automatically crop to DX-mode to eliminate vignetting). So there are plenty of lenses that will work, and whether you want excellent or cheap you'll have many options.

Didn't know m4/3 lenses can't go on it with adapter. Still figuring out the possible lens selections with this thing...it's gonna be a pain for a ton of folks. BUT, luckily I own enough Nikons to cover me.

Yeah, the lens adaptability is the one thing that still makes me want a GH2 over this. I love nikon glass, but I always saw the ETC (or 2.7 crop on nikon) as an excellent opportunity to use those lil c-mount lenses. I love those.

But yeah this camera is sick. 6000 dollars worth of mirror huh. I still want one.

Lens selection for Nikon is pretty much just Nikon lenses and some old medium format lenses. This is because Nikon has a huge sensor to mount distance so for most other lenses they would have to be halfway in the body to work, hence why Nikon to M4/3 camera adapters are so thick. However the good thing is that Nikon literally have thousands of lenses as all but the very earliest lenses fit on the bodies.

I personally will only use my best FX glass on the D4.
And, that will not stop me from using the 2.7 crop mode.

DX lenses will probably produce sharper details than FX lenses in DX and 2.7 crop mode.

Only if the DX lens is sharper than the FX lens.
In some cases that might be the 35mm f1.8DX lens.

I really doubt if the center of any decent FX lens is less sharp than the rest of it's glass.

besides nikon and medium format glass, I'd add leica-R as a very high quality option that's easily adapted to nikon (and sony, and canon, and nearly everything you can think of, that's one of the reasons I went with that route, amazing bokeh being the other) - http://www.similaar.com/foto/lensmount/lensmount.html - PL I think would be problematic, if not because of flange distance, then because of how much most PL lenses protrude into the body (I think you'd have to get the mirror ripped off first, it's a full Duclos job)
