Can you select the FX, DX and 2.7x crop manually?

Or is the DX mode only an auto-detect feature whereby it gets invoked only if a DX lens is put on?
 
You can select it manually in the menu. That said I don't know what it does if you put a DX lens on it. It might default to what the lens can handle. i.e. DX and 2.7x on DX lenses.
