Re: laptop question
I edit exclusively on laptop using a Dell 8200 Inspiron P4 2.0 MHz with 500mb Ram. I upgraded the screen to the xlga which helps when running through final edits with multiple viewers - it just widened the viewing angle. I digitize to a 250GB LaCie external firewire drive. I believe I'm using the graphics card below the one on the one you're looking at.
I've been doing this for almost 2 years with Avid Xpress 3.5. Haven't had any problems with the exceptions of a couple of expected annoyances like having to replace the 5 .dll files occasionally from the program folder.
Despite having the upgraded monitor, I still can't rely on it's color representation for what the actual will be. You'll probably want to eventually get an NTSC monitor - I'm in the market now. I'm also about ready to upgrade my RAM.
Looks like a good beefy laptop with lots of fast power. Good luck in making the decision.
