Re: FS700 - 1080p @ 8-bit 4:4:4 via 3G/HD SDI

Wow anyone manage to catch this unannounced feature of the FS700?

Through the 3G/HD SDI it can output 1080p @ 8bit 4:4:4.

I'm contacting Convergent Design to confirm if their Gemini 4:4:4 can record this signal.

If true then the FS700 is the true 8-bit version of the PMW-F3.

The FS700 will also be upgraded with S-Log later in the year too, not sure if this is a paid upgrade or not.

FS100 already outputs HDMI 8-bit 4:4:4. It isn't "real" 4:4:4 because there's not a sensor pixel for every color, but -- it already does it. Don't know if the FS700's will be different.

That camera with S-Log will be very attractive, if there's a way to overcome its 8 bit color space.

I finished a show shot on the C300, Clog-> internal 50mbs 8bit files, works great for them.. very little banding, and that was delt with by Genarts Monsters Anti-band filter

If Canon can make it work so well, i'd be betting Sony can too.

As Barry said the FS100 outputs full RGB over HDMI, however there are no cost effective ways to capture this on the go. Blackmagic Design have some cards/boxes that will do full 4:4:4 to a PC, but not portable.

Also Barry points out that on the 100 it's largely moot because it's a bayer image, however on the 700 it would be a valid choice. I hope that some of these external recorders would be upgraded to do this.

And yes, if Sony would allow a custom LUT to be uploaded instead of all this PP stuff we'd be laughing.... You could have log curves or your own creations especially for your own setups. It would be simple for Sony and give us so much more control.

Or just announce the 4K recorder so we know what the future holds!!

cheers
Paul
