FS5: Re: FS5 Handgrip Part#?

Re: FS5 Handgrip Part#?

Does anyone know the FS5 Handgrip Part#? I would like to order one separately (if possible) so I can use it on an FS7.

On that note, anyone know what kind of adapter would be needed to do this?

I have bought FS5 handgrip separetly. (I lost mine a shooting field unfortunatelly). It is possible to order in sony service centers, no problem. I dont know the exact name of it, it has a separete part number. In hungary was around 700 euro + VAT.

Is it working on an FS? This is anaother question.
I think no.
Maybe the service or anyone here will help you.

I think I read somewhere that the FS5 grip would work on the FS7. If I had to guess, I would guess that it would work fine. Some of the controls transmitted by that cable are standard Sony LANC protocol, like REC.

I'd be interested to hear for sure though.

At 22:20 in the video below, Alister Chapman says the protocol is the same between the FS7 and FS5 for the handgrip. He says you can use the FS7 handgrip on the FS5, but never mentions the other way around, but I would assume it would work if they use the same protocol.

Also worth noting, that all the both apparently use the same protocol, doesn't mean they're completely interchangeable. If the FS7 grip works on both cameras, it's hard to imagine why an FS5 grip wouldn't communicate with an FS7.

HOWEVER, even though the electronic interface is apparently identical, the two grips use very different methods to physically attach to the cameras. The FS7 grip coming fairly solidly attached to the extension arm, whereas the FS5 comes with something very similar to a E-mount lens attachment. Not sure how this could be circumvented, but maybe you've already considered a workaround.

Best of luck either way, and do post pics if/when you manage to get it working!

We sniffed (reverse engineered the Sony LANC protocol in 2012 for our Cinegrip line of handgrips. LANC is sort of standard but manufacturers change some codes as they like. You would find that if you plugged an FS7/5 grip into a Canon C300/500 or a BMD Ursa it would start/stop the cam and perform some lucky random functions as well. Our Grips work with Sony, BMD and Canon over LANC and our electrical engineer identifies and modifies the specific manufacturer variations via our software app to work with the three manufacturers mentioned. It's a interesting process and the manufacturers have been great in communicating
and helping us keep the codes confirmed.

Regarding physical fit I make a gizmo called a Sony Crony that was developed here on DVX on request from FS7 users here. About 20 Crony's have been working in the field for several months now w/o a hitch.

I now have a Crony 2 - with an improved ratcheting design that I will be showing in a few days. It works with both the FS7 and FS5 grip, modifying them to ARRI rosette. They are really a lovely part and are a silver
bullet fix for anyone wanting to standardize their grips or move from one FS to another.

If interested get in touch, the first batch is being made this week.

Facebook link below has info and pictures of the original Crony- photos of the new one should be up later today or tomorrow.

Is it possible to get a new grip with all of the functions of the Sony FS5 grip (dial, record/stop, custom buttons)?

No. Sony has a competitive advantage on us at this point with expanding the grip functions (tho it was cool in 2012/13 when we were the only ones who could do it.) It would cost us too much to sniff and code their specific changes/additions.
What we have is a simple trigger for start stop plus 3 dual function buttons under the thumb- activations that can be user mapped to activate 6 camera ASSIGN functions quickly in the field. PLus a few we customized like DISPLAY,
EXPANDED FOCUS and AUTO IRIS. Our grips control ALEXA, VARICAM and the new Panavision as well. They are by far the most universal, camera agnostic grip. And for build quality they are all by themselves.
