Re: documentary

Yeah, I'm sorry about the file size. Any idea's on how I can get it lower but still maintain some quality? It's a half hour long.

Thanks,
Vince

1/2 hour. Hmmmm Not really. Don't worry about it. Most people have high-speed.

Re: documentary

If the executive producers of the video are also the subject of the video, is this truly a documentary?

For example, Some Kind of Monster is a documentray about Metallica, but none of the members of Metallica commissioned or produced the resulting film -- they merely allowed it to be made.

I would argue this is a promotional piece.

Oh Gabe, you and your technical anti-establishment conspiracy theories. ;D

Re: documentary

Vinnie,

On the technical side, this production looked really good. You did a great job of documenting the work of this group - storyline was well developed, compositions and edits kept things moving and you had plenty of conflict!

Despite all my personal views and opinions on this issue, I feel like I gained further insight into what makes these people tick. That takes a lot of doing.

I think you need to cut out jumpcuts ;)

That will make the doc more smoother ;) ;) ;)

Re: documentary

Thank you everyone for your coments!

Gabe, I actually do agree with you, that it can't be truely objective being funded by a group that obviously is against abortion. So yeah, I guess promotional piece is a more accurate term. The main reason that I called it a documentary is that I followed them around New York and New Jersey and "documented" their journey. But I agree it's definately out to get their views across.

overlandfilms, Thank you for your compliments. It was tough to try to make a story out of it, as bascially they flew me out to New York and I shot everything I could, and did a few interviews with the kids. There was no storyline or script, just 20 hrs of footage! So I'm thrilled that it all came together!

Manster, Are you referring to the few times I had a headshot interveiw go into another? That's one of the things that bugs me too. I'm going to find some footage to put over one of the talking heads for a few seconds to break things up. Or were you talking about something else?

Thanks again!,
Vince

I don't know, seems like it worked for Michael Moore. He was able to pull off directing and producing a propaganda video that nominated and won him an Oscar for best documentary film. Today's documentaries seem to “point to a view of the person making it”. (Movie Maker Magazine December/January edition)

So ...dude, I got news for you…deal with it! :o ;D

Anyway...as far as the quality goes, I loved it! I think it came out great. The lighting was perfect, audio was leveled correctly, and colors seemed to ride smooth. It can get sometimes very hard to film a documentary using the DVX mic. Did you use a boom?

I'm also shooting a documentary on the start up of a CHRISTIAN CHURCH (oooops! Careful now ::)  ;)) and its positive impact on a forgotten community. I'll be posting my new “opinion-documentary” video soon.

Vinnie03, good work! Keep it up! You never know, might even win an Oscar or two.

Hopefully you do.

From MM #57: "Farenheit 9/11 (2004) Less documentary and more polemic... While people unanimously praise Moore's talent, some feel he belongs in a category all his own."

Documentary, by definition, connotes objectivity. Vinnie's description as a document of this trip is accurate. I was simply raising the question, which MM also raised, about the nature of documentary films.

Can you deal with questions without simple answers, DUDE?

Re: documentary

Thanks Shiloh_Arts,

You're right, shooting a documentary with the dvx mic is nearly impossible! I used a friend's sony c-74 (It's pretty old, I'm not even sure if they still make it) with a generic windscreen mounted on camera, for all the action shots. I wish I had the AT-4073a that I have now with the rycote softie! I shot some more footage for this group at the March for Life in DC on the 24th, and it turned out so much better! That Rycote softie is amazing! I wont ever shoot without it! Also I used a 85b filter on the lens and the footage agains the bright white snow turned out amazing as well! I'll post some of that later on.

For the interviews I used a samsung wireless mic. Wishing I didn't shoot in a big empty classroom with sound bouncing everywhere! but that's all we had available at the time... so ya make due right?

Thanks again,
Vince
