RCA to XLR Adapter question

A confused newbie here. I've combed through all of the stickies but haven't really found an answer to this question:
If I'm using a shotgun mic that requires an adapter to be used in my Panasonic DVX100B, will there be a big loss in audio quality? Or should I look for a mic that only as an XLR output?
The reason I ask is that I am thinking of buying the Audio Technica ATR-55, recommended as one of the budget packages in the sticky post. I would ideally use it as a boom mic, so I would require an extension of up to 25 feet or so.
Thank you!:dankk2:

25 feet is pushing it with an unbalanced cable and you might find electrical noise creeping in in some situations. There's budget and then there's budget and you get what you pay for. Depends on how serious a shooter you are.

I don't recommend the ATR-55 for anyone but soccer moms with low-end palmcorders. It's not too much better than the camera's built-in.

If you want something that is DVX-comaptible and can be used on a fishpole later, get an XLR shotgun.

Minor point. RCA plugs don't come into this. They are line level and you wouldn't connect a mic to one. I'm assuming this mic has either a 1/8" or 1/4" phono plug.
