The Mxing Board operator at this live concert tells me he can only provide an Audio feed via RCA. I told him I needed an XLR connection but he insisted RCA was the way to go! How do I input Audio via RCA into the HPX170?

P.S. Watching Barry's HVX Bootcamp DVDs I noticed he says you can only input RCA audio IN while in VCR/MCR mode. I need to be in CAM mode to record the event!
What are my options!?

Make sure he is sending you line level not mic level. If he is sending mic level you will need a transformer.

Hmm, I thought we were discussing converting RCA to XLR input. On the HPX, the RCA plugs are output only.

Regarding the OP question: Is there any reason the input from the audio feed couldn't be input to the the XLRs on the HPX? The RCA plugs would need to be adapted. Depending on whether the feed was line or mic, you would adjust the input on the HPX. Am I missing something?

Sounds like your sound guy is just pulling your leg. XLR is always better than RCA. He probably just doesn't have the right cable. Or his only available outputs are RCA.

However, an RCA to XLR adaptor is easy to find if you need it.

Just for future reference, you should always carry stuff like that, because every gig you do somebody somewhere is going to need ________ (fill in the blank with insane adaptor you never used until now) and nobody will have one. If you do, it makes you look good and more likely to be hired again. Just a word of advice.

Thats why I have a case that permanently stays in my car with extension cords, adaptors, ect, ect.

very simple answer:

"The Mxing Board operator" is either stupid or lazy. all you need to do is use an RCA to XLR cable/adapter. about $10 at your local radio shack or pro audio store. and he's a kind of crappy operator if he doesnt have a basic set of adapters in his toolkit.

though like jimmy says. you should have them in yours as well.
