Raylight quality loss?

Hi,

I just purchased Raylight to use with Vegas and let me say that working with the MXF files is great. However i do have an issue.

I read in the forums the Raylight blue is meant to show NO quality loss...so i exported some 1080 25p footage as uncompressed AVI, compressed it with the Blu Ray 24p template in Sorenson Squeeze and of course it looked unbelieveable. Then i exported the same footage with the Raylight codec and compressed it with the same settings in Sorenson Squeeze and i can definately see quality loss... Am i being too picky or what? i can even see the loss if i view the raylight AVI before compression with Sorenson.

Is exporting from Vegas with the Raylight codec the common option???

Any help would be great.

If you can avoid recompression in DVCPROHD that is always better, in other words always export your final product direct from the timeline. The only case where you really have to export DVCPROHD is for playback from the camera.

Also you can get slightly better results recompressing DVCPROHD (if you absolutely have to) by using native frame size option in Raylight and native frame size in your project settings (both must be used together).

Finally it's advisable to use the Green/Yellow/Red marker feature to make absolutely sure you are not rendering final product in those lower quality modes.

Hi,

I was hoping u would be the one to answer my question.

When i say export i mean render i need to start using the correct words. So i guess what i'm chasing is a simple "yes or "no" to the way i'm working with my MXF files. Is this the best way to work quality wise other than rendering "uncompressed" out of every app along the way?

Thanks for the quick response by the way

Ben

Hi,

Been doing render tests out of Vegas for hours...this is my conclusion, other than rendering uncompressed the best possible video quality i can get is with the WMV 9 highest quality setting...

It's WAY cleaner than Raylight Blue

I don't get it...how can the WMV file size be half but the quality kills Raylight Blue?
When i look at the rendered file i see that the Raylights bitrate is around 1500 and the WMVs is around 9000. Can anyone enlighten me on why i'm finding these results?

Probably you have some settings wrong but that is resolvable only by doing a support request through our website.

Hi Marcus,

I'll seek help through the site, Although Raylight seems extremely easy to use and i'm 99% sure i'm using the correct settings.

Ben
