Raylight pulldown removal in AVID MEDIAFILES?

Greetings,

I have edited an entire feature on AVID XPRESS. It was shot with the HVX200 using a firestore 100. The entire film was shot on 24p (non-advanced) and edited at 1080i/59.94. I have outputed a 1080i/59.94 to HDCAM, HDV tape, and Various NTSC Digital Beta Masters.

The client now wants a HDCAM 1080/23.976p Master. The post production editing house in L.A. does not want me to use a Snell & Wilcox frame rate converter due to its issue of occasionally creating a digital artifact going from 1080i/59.94 to 1080/23.98p. The editor (who uses FCP) told me the best way to do a pulldown removal with MXF files is RAYLIGHT MXFX. Which i happen to own.

A) what is the easiest way to do this pulldown removal using RAYLIGHT MXFX from one project to another. Can i use the same EDL?

and

B) uh slight problem, when I initially imported all my MXF files into AVID I broke up the original CONTENT folder and dragged all the MXF files from the VIDEO and AUDIO folders into AVID MEDIAFILES subfolder MXF subfolder 1

When I either try to drag the AVID MEDIAFILES, MXF, 1, or the actual MXF files, into RAYLIGHT MXFX, Raylight will give me an error

XML PARSING ERROR INSIDE FILE

How do I do pulldown removal from MXF files that are already sorted in AVID MEDIAFILES folder? and how can i relink the EDL from a 1080i/59.94 project into a 1080/23.976p project

By the way :) I have been working on numerous features (simultaneously) and it seems that every client wants a different type of format. I wish i knew before that a 1080/23.976p master was the way to go and easiest to create other masters (PAL, NTSC ETC.) I guess for anyone that ever has problems the way to go is always edit on 1080/23.98p and create your master this way, to make life easy on deliverables.

I have been stuck in the world of Domestic TV for 2 years and every contract the deliverables were always Digibeta NTSC or 1080i/59.94. Now i know ugh. If anyone can help with this RAYLIGHT question, it would be greatly appreciated. ugh
:)

Hey again,

Looks like i stumped the board huh ? :) Bob Russo suggested writing the project to a p2 card

http://www.avid.com/video/video_window.asp?videoID=23

and then putting the the p2 content folder into RAYLIGHT MXFX. Good idea. Only problem is
A) I don't have a p2 card - just Firestore
and
B) Wouldn't one need a p2 card slot on the actual computer to output to p2? or could i rent a 32 minute p2 card hook it to a firewire and output the feature in 3 segments.

Not a bad suggestion from Mr Russ. Just don't know if it can be done. Has anyone on this board ever outputted to a p2 card from AVID? Did you need a slot? or can you come out a firewire?

I have never written back to a P2, but I would read the Avid User Guide as to how it is done and what targets are supported.

You still have the issue of cadence on edit points which do not exist on source material. Every edit point in the film has an OUT and IN that will have a variety of cadences such as

A - A
A - B
A - C
A - D
B - A
B - B
B - C
etc.

not to mention the puilldown frames which are referred to as X which is the combination of B and C.

Perhaps the workaround to both of these is to consolidate your sequence with at least 3 frame handles - take all the new master clips and make a new sequence - write that sequence back to P2 (do it in segments is fine). Raylight those, bring into a 23.976 project, and start from there.

Have fun!

Michael,

But what if i did a video mixdown of the entire video timeline. Therfore there would be no "edits" when i would output to a p2 card. Another words, can you create a new video file (a video mixdown) and output that mixdown to a p2 card. The p2 card would see this video mixdown file as a new shot/clip and interupt it as thus. Once the recorded video mixdown was on a p2 card, could that be done as a pulldown removal?

Omar

They would not longer be called edit points - but scene or shot changes and the issue remains at those points. The cadence is broken.

Michael,

Gotcha, How about this...

A) consolodate the timeline in 1080i/60 into a new medai drive (G).
B) Take the AVID MEDIAFILES/MXF/1 files (from G) and copy and separate the audio and video in AUDIO and VIDEO folders. Create a CLIP folder and create a new XML file for each clip.
C) drag the new CONTENT folder into RAYLIGHT MXFX and do a pulldown removal.

Now

1) can i export the EDL from 1080i/60 into a 1080p/23.98 project?
2) Is there any easier way to do a pulldown removal from 1080/60 project without motion problems or cadence?
3) If i can't use the same EDL - would "not placing handles" on the conolodated timeline work and make my life easier as far as re-editing the project? or would there still be new cadence issues where the media ends.

Omar

You need a few frame handles in order for the Raylight to have what it needs to do the removal. EDL might be an issue since there is no tape name associated with files...

I still say Snell & Willcox...

Michael

Hmmmmmmmmm,

Okay i will bring all these issues to the studio and the lab.

thank you so much you have been incredibly helpful.

all the best,
Omar
