Raylight for Mac unleashed

Raylight for Mac is out, you can read about it and download a demo of it here
http://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac

In a nutshell it allows direct editing of MXF files in FCP, and allows you to view the MXF files in the Quicktime Player. If Raylight's running in the background, within 10 seconds of connecting a P2 Card or hard drive to your system you can start editing.

I'd appreciate any feedback as it's very 1.0

Marcus,
so far - so good :-)

Nice app, seems to work flawlessly and re-enlightens my HVX200 love.

Had an irritating first encounter, however: RL scanned firewire connected HDD for MXF files (with no mxf files on it, just out of sheer curiosity) upon first start and then told me it could not do its job on my Powerbook any more. Looked for the Raylight folder and found out it had been miraculously read/write protected. Changed that "by hand" and now Raylight works perfectly again. Any clues?

Am i to understand that this will be like a p2 viewer for mac. Click on file and quicktime player will open showing clip without opening FCP?

I downloaded the demo and keep getting message: could not create/users/shared/raylight folder.

Sounds like you might have a permissions problem if you cannot create the folder. Try repairing permissions. I haven't installed yet-- hopefully tonight after the next to the last Sopranos...

Had exactly the same problem. Navigate in Finder to users/shared/raylight (folder).
Click on raylight folder, type command-I and check in the opening Info Panel your read/write permissions. Change them to read/write permitted, close Info Panel and you're set. Seems to be a bug that occurs in case you start the app for the first time without a P2 card inserted.

Marcus?

Thanks PK that did it. Checked for folder after i installed the app and thought the folder would be there. Had to open app first to create folder which i thought i did. But now i have a contents folder on my hard drive but raylight scans and can't find it. Get a scanning process ended message with no results.

Okay I can get it to work with my camera with p2 connected. The noname with contents is found but it seems that if I transfer the contents folder over to a hard drive then run raylight it will not find the the contents folder.
I first like to transfer the cards contents and lastclip.txt to a hard drive in a folder I name then dupe to another hard drive for backup then eject card and do again. Raylight seems to force me to use it only when a card is connected and not when the the contents are in a folder on a hard drive. At least that is my experience. Would love to be proved wrong because once raylight is done quicktime opens it in player. In my limited use I have to use raylight first then transfer the cards to a hard drive. I would like it the other way around.

Would also like a preferences panel in Raylight so I can put raylight shared folder wherever I want

will it read windows raylight avi's?
No, sorry, but it will read MXF files authored from Raylight P2 Maker.

There will be a new version out late tonight or tomorrow that will fix the folder permission problem and allow a way to scan other areas areas for MXF files. Any more comments or suggestions are welcome.

That is done now, you can download it (version 1.01) at http://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac

The permission prob with creating the new folder is fixed, and there is a new text entry field for "more locations". You can drag a folder into it containing MXF files (either as part of a P2 card image or not), and Raylight will scan that as well.

it says g5 or intel, why not g4 as the last laptop with a pcmcia slot was a g4. being able to use this in the field with a powerbook, would be great. just the qt veiwing option, that way you dont have to import into fcp to make sure your clips arn't screwed.

It will probably work with a G4 but I haven't tested it yet.

I read everything from above, but I still get the could not create folder message, what Am I doing wrong here?
Delete the Raylight folder (in Users/Shared) or change its permissions to
read and write for all users. Then make sure you are running Vers 1.01 (use
Raylight->About Raylight to check that). If you still have problems go to
DVFilm.com and click on Support.

I had a folder with contents and lastclip on desktop in a folder I named

Dragged that folder in to new More scan locations box

raylight did its thing

Looked in raylight folder and link icon of clips opened in quicktime but were all white. No image.

Its getting better but I got no image when i clicked on converted file icon

It seems all converted file icons end up in the Raylight folder in the shared /users of my OS. I still would ask for a way to have those files go to a place I designate.

Also if i use the new scan location box and if I decide to place the original file folder somewhere else will the raylight link find it.

There was a problem with scanning "More locations" on the system drive,
I think that has been fixed now with 1.02.

The links do end up in the Raylight folder but you can move them anywhere. It might make the most sense to create per-project or per-scene subfolders and drag them in there. There will be an option probably in release 1.1 to have a user-selected links folder.

If the MXF files are dragged to somewhere else on the drive the link will find them (even if they're in the trash). But if copied to another volume or another folder,
then if you delete the original MXF file, then no. FCP warns you that the data is offline, or the clip goes black, and you would have to remake the link.
