Raylight Decoder for CineForm HDLink

Raylight Decoder is now available for purchase and download at

Raylight Decoder is a drop-in replacement for the Panasonic Decoder
used by CineForm HDLink. It corrects a design flaw in the Panasonic
decoder and provides a superior quality image. There are examples
here: http://dvfilm.com/raylight/raylightRes.htm#Panasonic

The decoder, once installed, overrides the Pansonic decoder, however
the Panasonic decoder can still be used in the P2 Viewer and
Windows Media Player for real-time playback of MXF files.

Hey I am looking into Raylight for my PC editing system.

I just chcked that example on DVfilm... does that mean that the compression I normally see will be different when using Raylight? Sorry didn't understand that.

Each decoder will implement the reverse discrete cosine transform slightly differently. I believe Raylight uses a floating point IDCT (Marcus, correct if I'm wrong) which is more accurate than the IDCT used with the Panasonic decoder. This is at the expense of decode performance, this is why mediaplayer will still use the Panasonic decoder. For CineForm users this is a bonus as you can now choose your DVCPRO-HD decoder. Install the Raylight decoder trial and CineForm HDLink tool will use it automatically (uninstall Raylight and HDLink will resume using the decoder from the P2 Viewer.)

Note: The P2 Viewer is still a required installation to operate the Raylight DirectShow decoder within HDLink. I've asked Marcus at DVFilm if he can help us make a P2 Viewer-less version in the future.

Raylight uses 16-bit fixed point IDCT. The quality and speed difference is due to Panasonic using the hardware MPEG decoder pipeline built in to the graphics card, which uses the wrong coefficient weighting since it was designed for MPEG. But it is extemely fast since everything is done in hardware.

Its great both of your companys are working together to help facilitate the HVX200 / P2 workflow. Kudos. I would not own the camera if not for one or both of these products. . ...

Let me get this straight.

I am using The CineformAspect HD Link and using Cineform Preset Projects in Premiere Pro2 . Is this post recommending that I purchase the Raylight Product to improve/upgrade that workflow/process/quality ?.

Any downsides to doing this (apart from the cost)?

I guess I am a little thrown by two companies seemingly co operating and not bagging each other!

Me too, but congrats to both of them for it! After all that slagging we had here between two other companies, I'm glad to see David and Marcus cooperating and making things better for the end user.

To All,

I hope we can do even more working together, it is much better for small companies to team against the bigger foe. :)

Shooter,

The downside is reduced conversion speed, the upside is a lower noise image, which I think is the best way to describe the image difference. You should try for yourself. Find a MXF clip that you like, and convert it before installing the RayLight trial, then convert it again (with the same settings) after installing the Raylight decoder. The load the two CineForm AVIs into two instances VirtualDub (or similar) then switch between the top most view. The difference is subtle, yet for film projects that need to enhance the image through color correction, lower noise is a good thing.

Im convinced (by David and his vison of a brave new corporate world ) so I bought it to support the cause (and have installed it without doing a test).

I ll take better quality over speed any day.

Coming in the opposite direction can the P2viewer be forced to display with the raylight decoder? (I assume not)

It will if you make a copy of the P2Viewer.exe file and give it a different name
like MyViewer.exe But I wouldn't recommend it unless you have 2 CPUS or more because the Raylight decoder is slower.
