Raylight 2.02 Released -- Includes Plugin for Vegas!

I'm having a bit of a mental hiccup after shooting 1080 for the first time (used to shooting 720pn to get as much footage out of a card as possible). We shot some stuff at 1080 24p (not pa), and once the mxfs were in Vegas, they appear with an unchangeable frame rate of 29.97. Should I run them through RayMaker or DVFilm Maker before editing?

The tests I ran through Raymaker and keyed in AE had interlacing every 5th frame (footage reads as 23.976, and that's what the composition's rate is at), so I assume I'm running something at the wrong frame rate. Switching the composition rate to 29.97 doesn't seem to make it any better.

Raymaker won't remove 1080 3:2 pulldown, only advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown.
DVFilm Maker does not have that capability either.

However if you do not attempt the pulldown removal in RayMaker, you can remove the pulldown in After Effects.

Neither. Don't use 1080/24p mode, use 1080/24pA.

If you shot 1080/24p mode, that's exactly the result you can expect to receive. With 1080/24pA RayLight can remove the pulldwon automatically. It can't do so with 1080/24p mode.

Thanks, worked like a charm! I've learned my lesson now, think I'll keep a little chart of which settings not to use in my camera bag for the future.

Can someone help me here - I can't seem to get my footage to 'change' in Premiere. It just looks like ASS all the time. If I render, it looks even worse than if it's unrendered.

I've tried starting the Raylight program before Premiere - that doesn't work. I've tried starting it after premiere - that doesn't work either. Clicking BLUE, GREEN or Red doesn't do anything at all.

Probably you need to contact support since there are about a zillion questions they need to ask you. It's free so why not? http://dvfilm.com/supportForm.htm

Does anybody know what kind of quality degradation occurs when editing MXF files in a Vegas timeline and outputing to AVI? Is it still necessary to to code AVI files from the MXF files if I need high quality output?

Wow! I just dropped my first MXF into Vegas... this is so sweet!
So on set we could copy to our external HDDs and THAT'S IT! someone can start editing that very milisecond between P2 offloads! the future is now trully here! lol

AND the red setting works!!! w-o-w!!!

I just saw this minutes ago so I didn't get a chance to read any more than the first two posts and the first post on this in the Vegas and DVCPRO HD sticky.
so Yellow is not supported yet? but it will be?
also, the pixels are square on the clip, not 1.33333, so we set/leave the project pixel setting on square also... right?
Did they release a second update since the first "MXF straight to timeline update"?

HA HA HA!!! I feel like they are givving me stuff for free!!!

Exactly. So now imagine how awesome it will be when you don't even have to offload cards at all; you just plug in your card and edit the footage straight from it. With the 32GB card coming out at the end of the year, that's 80 minutes per card, or almost three hours on two cards. So yeah, shoot the footage, plug it in, edit from it. Don't even involve a hard drive at any point in the production chain. That's when it'll be really cool!

What Marcus has done is amazing and a real service for Premiere/Vegas users!

Yes, it is amazing... to be able to have the Red button work without having to modify the file almost makes no sense. Does Raylight install a codec wherever codec files are and then change it by pressing the button? So he wrote two codecs right?

If you do a one day project with one 32GB you might be ok, with two of them you basically are guaranteed to be ok... 2.6 hours is enough to cover most events, it will be hard to have the need for more. Also, you could get two PCMCIA slots for both cards to be available at the same time if you want to stay on a solid state medium when you go home. Can you say "Nice workflow mo-fo!"
Now, of course, if you shoot the next day you will need to offload, the again you might be ok with one 32 and whatever you already have. Also, you will now do your offloading while you get a beer at home.

Now, if I am not mistaken Barry, what you are thinking about --and the real beauty of this update coupled with a 32GB-- is that we will be able to pop the card into the laptop between setups and SEE THE FREAKING MOVIE AS IT IS BEING MADE!!!

Of course you seldom shoot in chronological order, but scenes that take place in a particular location usually are for the most part covered in order, unless you have some sort of stunt or an other particularly complicated shot.
This is INSANE!!! And they (hollywood) don't know about it yet!!! And we can do it today on our slow-ass laptops!!!

Barry, I would hugh you now if you were here! (don't get any ideas though, lol)

Vegas RULES, DVfilm RULES, Pana RULES

Exactly (except that hug part... um... yeah, I'll pass.) :)

And yes, Raylight does two codecs: a full-resolution DVCPRO-HD codec (which is used for both yellow and blue) and a low-res proxy codec for red, but that's only available if you use RayMaker; it's not available if you just drag the MXFs to the timeline (because it's RayMaker itself that creates the low-res proxy).

So how does Raylight Controller make Vegas show the lower rez with this update?
And how do Yellow and Blue use the same codec? I mean, how does this thing work?!?!? seriously, cause I don't belive in magic... well, now I just might.

Yellow decodes about half the coefficients and draws at half resolution
for faster processing.

Red decodes the proxy which is 1/4-resolution and uses MPEG-like encoding.

If you use the MXF plugins, clicking Red gives you the same as Yellow because there is no proxy, except if you render a preview and playback in Red, and then it is using a proxy again for the preview.

You can keep up with the latest developments in Raylight by bookmarking the Raylight Blog, it's at http://dvfilm.com/raylight/raylightHelp.htm#blog
I try to update it every week or so.

So I guess "decoding" is the process of reading the files and interpreting them visually. How about "encoding"?

What is "Proxy"?
