FS7: Raw out of FS7

Hi
just wondering if someone educate me how to get UHD 60p raw files out of fs7. Our client is requesting the files as CinemaDNG. We have budget to make it happen. just to find out the right workflow.
I know the output through the extension unit is not great. I think the HDMI output is the only clean option to record externally in UHD.
Thanks a lot

For RAW you need the XDCA extension unit and an external recorder like the Odyssey O7Q+ or the Sony R5. But, it's 4K, not UHD. The XDCA works fine in 4K, it's not so great in 2K. HDMI is a video signal.

No, I'm saying it works fine in 4K since the January firmware updates to both systems. I'm currently using the FS7/O7Q combo on a doco that I've been shooting in Saudi on and off since August last year. Like you, I had noise issues with it at first and was reluctant to use it on several shoots, but for the last few months it's been solid. Mind you, I have been out in the desert most of the time!

in other words, fine up to 60 fps, correct? I tried the raw out to 7Q+ (with latest FW) at 180 & 240fps recently and still had really nasty noise even when rating at ISO 1000.

Yeah, definitely don't touch 2K. Frankly, unless you need RAW or ProRes I'd strongly advise using the internal 10 bit recording; the difference in quality is so marginal, but the added PITA to the shoot set-up is another matter.

Honestly, the FS7 is just not designed to shoot RAW really. I've had the FS700 + 7Q and had the FS7 + XDCA + 7Q and it's UN-COMPRESSED DNGs which means massive, massive file sizes. I ended up selling the XDCA.

On the FS700, it was bit more worth it because the image quality from the 7Q RAW was so much better than the weak internal codec, but on the FS7, the internal codec is quite good to begin with so I've never felt the need for RAW. I got the new Scarlet-W for shooting RAW because Red is really designed for it. FS7 is not IMO.

has magenta issue been solved? assuming there is no shift in 4K dng files..
Hey Liam
do you still follow this workflow to process your dngs from 7q?

Unfortunately this project requires RAW files, and I need to figure out the best workflow. Thanks

Magenta solved months ago with updates to both camera and odyssey. Workflow is detailed on convergent design's site

What would people say offers the highest possible image quality out of the FS7?

I've read about the nightmarish issues with the raw output, so we'll assume that's off the cards. But how well does the Odyssey7Q's Raw-ProRes conversion work? And how does it compare to ProRes recorded directly from the SDI ports, and the internal XAVC?

It seems like the available options are:

- 12-bit 4k external raw (O7Q)
- 10-bit 4k internal XAVC
- 10-bit 1080p internal ProRes
- 10-bit 4k external ProRes (O7Q)
- 12-bit(?) raw to 4k ProRes (O7Q)

Which option do people think offers the best image quality with the fewest compromises?

By all accounts the cleanest signal is 4k via HDMI to an external pro res recorder. But this is pretty marginal over internal XVAC-I.

I offloaded my extension unit and 7Q because the raw output was useless for my needs. I imagine shooting in the desert you might get less noise in the shadows :)

I'm shooting ProRes, as it was demanded by the client. But yes, that tutorial looks right and it also highlights the noise floor that you need to keep an eye on!

Hey
We are doing a test to see the quality of Raw output from FS7. I can send you some dngs for sure for those fomats.

for sure..
just note that I won't process dngs. You need to decode and change its color space by yourself as it is explained here. (https://vimeo.com/146135938)

no problem ;-)

For dealing with cDNG I highly can recommend slimraw http://www.slimraw.com
I used it with the FS700 / 7Q and it reduces file about ±50% lossless without any issue up to now.
I used it even to offload from 7Q SSD and had compressed files immediately on the computer

Interesting! Thanks for sharing.

The Raw files do have a lot of flexibility but more noise in the shadows. The Raw->Prores looks to have more contrast than XAVC?

I've been trying to decide if the Raw back is even remotely worth it. I have a Shogun so I wouldn't be able to get DNGs anyways... looks like a firm pass for me.
