GH2 RAW Hardware Hack for GH2 : Info, Progress, Etc.

I think the PCIe device would need to connect to the data at suitable stage, where the video has already been scaled and filtered down to 1080p, but not yet compressed and colors suppressed. At least in the beginning they could not read the Foveon sensor quickly enough for video, but this could have changed.

I would pay a lot for this upgrade. I was all ready to send my HVX200 in to Jaun at Andromeda to get the Hydra upgrade, but just before Hydra was released, they got bought and squashed. If I remember correctly Hydra was going to be $3500. I'd definitely pay at least that, maybe more, for doing this to my AF100 and right around that price for my GH2.

i spoke with a guy from optimacine and told me that he probably could do it but he is busy ....
he started new project ....
2/3 150 fps raw dng camera ...

i spoke with him and he told me that his PCIe interface goes 500MB on raid ssd....
i try to perused him to start gh2 raw project but no luck ...
there is a lot of cheap second hand gh1 ...
why not try to hack one of them ...
if he succeed then all funding shouldn't be problem...
@Dan Hudgins can u try once more to talk with him

A hardware hack should work on ANY camera with bandwidth low enough to be recorded, and for higher bandwidths like in 3-chip cameras you can record to 3x PC at once to get enough bandwidth.

My point with the OptimaCine.com (tm) PCIe interface is that it could be a "universal" path for hardware hacks on ALL Bayer type cameras (and maybe also 3-chip cameras) just by making a small interface board to convert each cameras internal data format into "universal" Bayer data in the Adobe (tm) DNG bit format used in the Acam dII (tm) and KineRAW (tm) cameras.

That way, you could change cameras just by un-pluging the cable to the PCIe interface from one camera and plug it into another camera like going from a GH2 to a T3i etc.

My free de-Bayer program DANCINEC.EXE (tm) can be adjusted to de-Bayer various size and orientation RAW and DNG Bayer sensor data as well as monochrome data from 3-Chip cameras. OptimaCine.com (tm) already has software to capture Bayer data for his PCIe interface.

So Universal camera de-Bayer software exits and is free and on my Web site RIGHT NOW. You can look at my videos on Vimeo to see what it did with the tiny KineRAW-S8p (tm) 2.5K sensor data, and imagine what it would look like on FF sensor data from the larger Canon cameras, maybe even the 4K Canon as things progress. My software supports large sensor sizes and my DI system works larger than 4K RIGHT NOW in beta-test.

Why bother hacking some still camera when you can get high quality machine vision camera heads in a variety of sensor formats ready to go with GigE network interfaces? Just need to add a reasonable OLPF to the sensors. By the way that Kineraw S8 footy looks spectacular! Nice job Dan.

Knowing the proper pin out for data would only be needed. The camera would continue to operate as before and have all of the usual image adjustments and features.

because we get bigger size sensor gh2 in 16:9 is 18.6mm ...
better resolution pixel binning give us 3.5 MP frame...
we get raw dng and avchd for proxy with sound...
lcd and viewfinder ....
hdmi for monitoring ....
better dynamic range (2X2 pixel binning theoretically gives 2 stop better DR snd SNR , but in real life is about 1.5 stop) DxOMark rate gh2 at 11.3 stops with binning we get 12.8 ...
24 ,25 , 50 and 60 fps @ 3.5MP
easer to use than industrial cameras ...
cheaper 700$ for gh2 500$ for hack 600$ for decent laptop ...
for about 2000$ u got baby alexa ...
no wonder why they buy and kill andromeda project ...

People that speak Chinese should show him the success of the latest digital bolex. A hardware hack of the gh2 would sell in the thousand if his price is as he stated $ 500 (even higher). I don't personaly know if it is not easier just to put a 35mm sensor coupled to his board and then some output port for recording and monitoring.

that guy did all hard work ...
pcie card ,interface + Dan Hudgins software ...
its much easier ...
just tap data from sensor not to wory about body , bateries , lens mount , olpf etc ....
only problem is that he doesn't know potential of his project ...
he try to make camera from scratch ....
and his English is very bad...

No one talks Chinese :-) Yes that is the problem and not even from him. Since the days of the SUMIX etc. a lot of these camera (machine vision) companies have not understood the potential of this market. The success of the crowd funding of the digital bolex is just the tip of the ice berg. With the current state of tech, you just need a camera head with a raw output and monitoring and a lens mount. They already have most of it.

look at si2k mini ...
its nothing more than machine vision camera head with olpf and si2k dvr software for recording ...
and they charge 7000e...

I went to your website, but unfortunately it's not coherent (www.dancad3d.com). However, there appears to be a wealth of information I am interested in, so I need to invest time in browsing through the content.

But can I quick-start experimenting with DANCINEC.EXE (tm) using RAW still images from a Lumix GH1?
