RAW compression and food for thought

Keep in mind that uncompressed raw recording takes up a lot less space than uncompressed HD. So it may not be quite as bad as you're thinking...

I wouldn't call it a lot less, 12bit RAW 2k at 240fps still takes up 800MBps vs 1300MBps for 10b 422 uncompressed at the same framerate. For those of us used to 30MBps in AVCHD that is written to the card at 7.5MBps, 800MBps and 1300MBps might as well be the same... and frankly that 30MBps stuff looks pretty good for most work while being 20x less of a pain to deal with (except for waiting for the buffer readout).

Then again, Prores HQ would be about 220MBps which is also no small data rate, so LT and 422 options could come in pretty handy.

But then this isn't really uncompressed RAW is it? AFAIK : Sensor > Compression > 3GHDSDI -> O7 Debayer -> O7 Rebayer -> 'Uncompressed RAW'

It seems a bit daft to end up with a larger file size than the data coming through the 3GHDSDI

It would make so much more sense to not have RAW at the end but a full range lightly compressed signal. I'm not sure what the image effects of wavelet compressing the RAW compressed image out of the camera would be. As touched on in this thread the compression artefacts seem quite obvious already.

Mitch, is the debayer for the 2K and 4K basically the same? Meaning that the effort going into debayering the 240 isn't taking away from debayering the 4K signal and then writing downsized versions of that to disc?

cheers
Paul
