Just got my camera and noticed that when it is turned off and I tip it forward and backwards you can hear a piece moving slithty. When the camera is on you don't hear the noise at all. I believe it is the lens area making the noise.
Is this normal? Does anybody elses do this?
Thanks in advance.

Re: rattle when turned off

Whoa! You must have gotten the Lithuanian knockoff made from old Red Army truck parts!

:o

Re: rattle when turned off

The place I bought from (Beachcamera.com) emailed me back and said this wasn't normal ???. I'll have to do an exchange i guess. I'll let everyone know how that goes after it happens.

Re: rattle when turned off

No, it IS normal. It's part of the optical image stabilization system.

We're just yankin' ya, like we do with ANY newbie who asks that question.

Re: rattle when turned off

Yeah, we were razzin' ya, zeman. It is normal.

I hope we came clean before you packed it up. ;)

JASON! STOP!

JASON! STOP!

DO NOT RETURN YOUR CAMERA!  THE RATTLE NOISE IS NORMAL!  IT IS IN THE MANUAL!  SORRY FOR THE CAPS!  JUST WANTED TO GET YOUR ATTENTION BEFORE SPENDING MONEY ON SHIPPING AND WASTING TIME!!!!

Re: rattle when turned off

Whats funny is that the place who sold hiim the camera said it needed to be returned! Sigh....

I love those knowlegable sales reps.

Re: rattle when turned off

Those noises give me the chills. How come someone can design something that sounds broken right out of the box... And something that remains kinda loose when the camera is off? That ought to break in the long run, don't you think? >:(

Hmmm. I'd read about the DVX "clunk" long before I actually bought the camera, so I knew to expect it. Still, it's hardly noticable at all on mine!! Just a faint little noise that doesn't sound serious at all. Isn't it the same on everyone's, or is it quite loud on some people's??

I guess I'm used to the rattly old PD150's we used at Uni; they were on the verge of falling to bits I think, from drastic overuse. :P

Re: rattle when turned off

Just shot a short on one of those 150's. It was a loan from a TV station to the university. They got it from sony as a pre-release model. A new meaning to the word "wear". ;D

But it came off great, anyway.

No, I didn't actually hear the noise of a turned off DVX (I only saw them "on"). So sorry for talking about something I don't fully understand. It's just that I'm on the verge of getting one, and reading topics related to rattling in general are a little disconcerting...

but I guess all of that is related to the way you treat it. I'm sure if you treat it like you would treat an Arri, it would probably last as long. We just want the luxury of treating those prosumer video cams as family cams.

*laughs* Ah the good ole' PD150! Half the one's I see knocking about now are covered in gaffa tape and permenant ink-pen marks for rack focusing. You're right though, they were and definitely still are great cameras! :D

Still, if the Uni decides to upgrade at some point, I'd go back and recommend they get DVX's. If not for the superb image quality, then for the awsome learning curve when it comes to all the manual tweaking. You can learn a lot from this camera just by plugging it into a monitor or television and pressing buttons!!

Anyhoo. Don't be put off by the "clunk". It's a characteristic of this camcorder. I find it reasuring for some reason, perhaps because I never really need the OIS enabled so it's nice to have a reminder that it's still actually there! ;)

Well, true. I figure if someone doesn't know the answer to something that three minutes of research could have supplied him, he deserves to be razzed . . .

But then, he was going to return his DVX because of some doofus at Beach Camera, so it was necessary to let him off the hook early . . .
