Random liberties (zoom problem)

Every now and then, my DVX just starts zooming out and then it doesn't zoom at all for a few seconds.

Is this normal?

Is there a rational explanation?

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

Not normal. Remember there are two zoom levers, so next time it happens make sure you're not accidentally pressing down on the handle zoom or something like that (that's been reported here before). If it does it all by itself when nobody's touching it, it might need a trip to the repair shop.

The other thing that could cause it is the remote control, so if you're operating in an area where someone else might be using a Panasonic remote control, that might cause it. You can go into the menus and disable remote control reception (or set it to VTR2 instead of VTR1) and that might eliminate this as a potential source for your problem.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

Also when it starts zooming out it just zooms either until it's all the way out or alot. Even if I don't have the zoom buttons pressed down.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

Well that sure sounds defective... definitely give 'em a call and see what they say.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

Would it have anything to do with the "zoom-focus" function in the display setup submenu?

That was on and I switched it off.

Would that help? I do record in 24p so I have to use manual zoom.

Would a focus issue or that function I mentioned cause the camera to just start zooming out?

Also, I just remembered that sometimes when I was zooming IN with the handle zoom (set on 1 for a slower zoom) it would instead begin to zoom out so that's weird.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

If this is not normal, I'll just have to give EVS a call.

Thank you so very much for your help Barry!

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

The Zoom/Focus menu item only controls whether the MF00 and Z00 numbers show up in the display. No other function is controlled by that menu item.

And you can use power zoom when in 24P mode, there's no restriction on that.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

I had it happen once. I had bumped the handle rocker and it stuck slightly, causing it to zoom in slowly. I played with the rocker for a few minutes and it hasn't done it since. It was brand new out of the box, so maybe it was just stiff.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

Sorry. By rocker, I meant the top handle zoom control (it "rocks" back and forth between wide and tele).

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

I don't think that's what is happening.

I know that hasn't been the case every time it's happened.

Re: Random liberties (zoom problem)

..............................Actually..........I'm pretty sure that I've figured it out.

When I film, I like to use the handle zoom, and sometimes the angle that I film at like if I am pointing it up at a tall tree trying to film pretty leaves, I am pressing the zoom rocker by the tape ejector. It is comfortable to have a part of my palm of my hand on the zoom out position so that's why I can't zoom in on the handle...because I can't zoom in and out at the same time.

What a dork am I.

I am sincerely sorry for even bringing this "problem" to y'all's attention. I hope you guys are able to still take me seriously if there is a next time.

So thanks guys and sorry!
