Random Grabs

Hey, guys. I haven't posted here in a few months. Unfortunately I haven't been able to do much video work lately. but here's a little collection of random screen grabs from stuff I've shot since I bought my DVX. Some of them are using 35mm lenses, and some arent. I most likely don't have any of the scene file settings saved - hah. Most of this stuff was from just screwing around. Hopefully when I get some time and extra money I can try to shoot something real. Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Some of these are CCd and some aren't.

the last two overall look the best. I see that you are the site designer for cinemek. you aren't using one of their beta units are you? if so, that's the most grain I have seen in anything from one of the g35's.

by the way, did you guys end up hosting the cinemek site on MediaTemple?

Two of the grabs were using a 35mm adapter. The adapter's body was of a G35, but the screen was from something else. (Any grain is from the really bad screen. You'll also notice the really bad boken on those two. The areas 2 feet away are just as "blurry"/out of focus as the areas 10 feet away. Those two grabs shouldn't be taken into the "beta g35" category whatsoever.)

We haven't yet moved the site to Media Temple, though we will transfer it as soon as the product is actually ready to ship. At that point we will also re-launch the forum.

The one weird thing - the guy laying on the bed (second to last grab) SEEMS to have some major barrell distortion. Is that normal when the DVX is at full wide?

Is it just me or do these look very video? I know this is a tedious issue and you may not even have been trying to go for a film look but the whites don't seem so white and the darks not so dark...

No, it's not just you. The ones of the girls face weren't very CCd. They're super close to the originals. If you wanted more of a "film look" you would have to crush the blacks a bit, slightly brighten the whites, and then desaturate the image to get rid of the extra saturation that the contrasrt increase made. Everyone has their own way of making "film-like" images, but after going through that they would look alot closer to film. Though the main issue with those inparticular is the lighting. The lighting on the girls face is VERY flat and boring. The reason the last two grabs look the best is mainly due to the lighting (which was actually natural lighting coming in from windows), and also thet fact that they're very sharp. The reason the ones with the dude in the car don't look so great is mainly because it's pretty freakin blurry, the out of focus areas look very "gaussian blur"ish instead of a real 35mm lens bokeh. Lots of learning experiences for me. Since I bought my DVX and other video equippment, I've just been waiting for an opportunity where I can actually use it all :( The place I live pretty much only has one person who's interested in film making.. and that's me. Oh well. I'm sure the time will come. Until then I'll keep shooting useless footage and getting more experience.

Thanks for your comments everyone :)

-Jeff
