I really was given a lot of freedom as the DP and I experimented a lot with different techniques.
When I wasn't using a 20mm pancake.
We used a canon adapter for some 50mm and 85mm shots in which I put nylon stockings behind the lens. It was a spur of the moment type of thing. I asked the director if she had any old leggings and she did. I would have preferred silk but this was a good alternative. It definitely took the edge off of that 'HD Look' and allowed the light to flare in an interesting formation that I LOVED.
Also, I had this gold material piece that I was putting in front of the lens to create this bokeh effect. And what the nylon did was give the bokeh some interesting texture - which was a nice side effect. Just different from your average bokeh, which I liked. I think you can definitely use that when say you are shooting something, want shallow depth of field but maybe it's a darker type film and you don't want it to be too pretty. It can add some nice texture.
Anyway, enjoy.
