Rainbow Coloured Lightning Bolts on Highlights of footage

Hey guys. I've recently been noticing rainbow coloured lightning bolts dancing around highlighted parts of my DSLR footage especially when things are moving quickly in the shot. The problem isn't there frame by frame, only when it's played. Originally I thought this was just a DSLR crappy codec problem but then I noticed the same thing on an episode of Spartacus as well. I've also noticed that things I've shot a year ago has this problem as well, some pretty bad. So since there's no way I wouldn't have noticed this horrible look a year ago, this must be a recent thing. Could be some new update on my players (QuickTime and VLC) but I'm more inclined to think it's my video card on my Mac Mini crapping out.

Anyone ever have this problem before?

Thanks

You might be describing aliasing. The color-fringing on highlights is one of the most objectionable
effect of not having a strong OLPF in a camera is that extra detail gets through to the debayering
algorithm and it can't figure out what is real information or aliased information.

Probably too early to say that this is your problem, post a screen shot.
