Rain machine

How do you create rain for a shoot? Is there a special contraception for this, maybe something that connects to a hose or water source? Actually, is a hose pointed downward enough?

...and what's the best lighting setup for this?

Thanks! :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

my guess would be to get some pvc pipe, connect to a hose with a sprinkler head like the ones you see in buildings to extinguish a fire. My guess.

Point the hose upward. You want the water drops to be falling, not squirting out. For a cheap rain device get a long lenght of PVC pipe overhead, and put sprinklers on it, pointing upward, and let it just fall down naturally.

But if you need to cover a large area, that's a lot tougher obviously.

Light from behind. The only way rain will show up is if it's lit from behind. If it's day, it helps to have a dark background too. See the cine extra on Rashamon.

Also I second what Barry said. Unless you are shooting under trees that will interfere, just shooting the hose straight up and letting it fall will provide a good effect. Building a PVC rig may be overkill for most situations and provide only a marginal improvement in rain quality. It'll also limit your flexibility.

It can also help sell the effect if you have a second hose sending rain into the background, an often forgotten aspect of rain is that tends to rain in other areas other than where your talent is standing!

If you insist on using a contraception method, well then you could always use the old "poke a bunch of small holes in a condom and stick it on the hose" method. Just make sure you don't accidentally use it afterwards because it doesn't work too well for its original purpose at this point.

I have seen an interview whit a FX person, and they used this things thats in the roofs of building, that in case of fire, will sprinkle water. They had one of those things on a hose, and it made good looking rain. Easy as hell as well.
