Rail system standard?

It's explained nicely here:

I don't think everyone follows the standards, as I have a few different pieces of rail gear and the distance from the camera mount of the center of the rails is different, and on both systems the rails are centered (15 rails). Further, the distance between where my lens comes out of the body is not the same to the mounting hole at the bottom. Just look at the difference with an Red Epic and a Sony FS100. Definitely the lens is at a different position relative to the mount at the bottom.

You should contact the specific maker of a rail system to find out if they follow a particular standard.

I had my rail blocks custom machined by a friend to be exactly these dimensions, but now that I'm switching from a bolt on solution to the Manfrotto 501 quick release system, it's going to be a bit taller. I'm concerned about compatibility with matte boxes in the future. Do most companies make them with height adjustment?
