RAID-0 or RAID-1?

I just got a WD Studio Edition II 4TB drive, and I'll be running it Firewire 800 to my MacBook Pro. I'm not really sure if I'm gonna leave the drives striped RAID-0 or stripe them RAID-1.

Any thoughts on what my editing experience might be with one configuration versus the other?

Thanks for the link, but I am aware of the logistical differences in the two. I guess what I was getting at is, how big is the difference in sustained throughput over Firewire 800? Has anyone had experience editing with both setups over Firewire? Will editing slow to a stutter at RAID-1?

In terms of compression, I'll likely be editing with AVCHD native in Premiere Pro CS4, as well as MPEG2. For some higher-end projects, I'll likely use either CineForm or SheerVideo.

Any other thoughts?

If left with only the option between the two I would pick RAID1, every time. When working with critical data which cannot be lost without major costs, loss in time, or perhaps reputation, you must always err on the side of caution.....yes you will receive some extra speed from RAID0, but is it worth yours and your clients peace of mind?

I agree with Nick. I've lost a Raid 0 raid before and it cost me dearly in time, money, and aggravation. I'll never go with any Raid format that doesn't have some fail safe. I prefer 5 when I have a controller and the number of drives to support it, but 1 is ok too. Yes, you will sacrifice speed... but in my experience is there is nothing slower than a broken 0 array.

What would be the advantage on those WD drives to RAID-1? Would you really open it up to swap out one bad drive. I would recommend RAID-0 or none at all and just save backup copies of all project files somewhere else.

I store all my P2 masters on Raid1 drives. The only raid 0 I have is my media drive on the Avid. Nothing critical on that drive as it can all be batch imported from my p2 masters if a crash occurs.

Just configured the WD Studio Edition RAID-1. I'll let everyone know if editing speeds on my MacBook Pro via FW 800 are unbearable.

What do you intend to edit with this FW800 RAID arrangement using a one bus FW MBP?

Do you really anticipate much if any speed increases with just one firewire bus?

RAID) for safety on your original drive with all your videos, RAID1 on your editing drive (of course it is a different drive .. right uh ?)
