No matter how i position the camera/zoom/fiddle w/ apeture.... I cannot get the depth of field short enough to get a quality rack focus like seen on tv/ movies/ etc..... please help!

What are you shooting with? Secondly, it doesn't look like you're referencing position of the actual camera... If not, that's a definite big factor, especially with the HVX or DVX. Let's say you're like three feet away from object A (Zoom at 85; MF at 20 or something) and you've got Object B fifteen feet away behind object A. You should be able to rack focus to 50 or 60 (I'm being very hypothetical here...) and pick up Object B.

I know you can do this with the HVX/DVX. Try setting shots up this way...increase the distance between whatever you want to rack focus on and be up and close on the foreground object with a high zoom and gun for an aperture of 4-5.6 of higher if possible.

Follow Geoff's advice, and just keep playing with it! The DVX is capable of pretty shallow DOF. You've just got to focus more on the placement of objects in the frame and in the different depth planes.

Things to consider.

1) keep the distance from the camera to the subjects as different as possible (one very close and one as far away as possible).

2) use the longest lens setting (focal length) that you can - read zoom in

3) use the largest aperture (smallest f-stop) that you can

All of these used in combination will yield a considerable difference in the character of the critical focus in your rack

Spot on, khmuse. Do exactly what this guy said, and you'll be surprised how shallow your DOF can go, as well as the deepness.

All of that is true, but it can be difficult at full zoom with deep character spacing to attain the correct composition for the shot you are trying to get. I found that out myself. It can be tough to get what's drawn on the storyboard while simultaneously doing all of the DOF tricks. You can compromise. At zoom 50, F2.0, you'll have more flexibillity. Don't expect the world, just make sure you've got a great composed shot.
