quiet

Actually the world's quietest place is reported to be in Minneapolis, MN. An underground anechoic chamber built for testing where I hope to visit some day. They say it's a freaky experience to be down there.

There is/was an anechoic chamber a few miles from my house. I have been in it many times. An audio recording studio rented the space and used it as a sound booth to record voice overs. It was built to test the sounds made by weaving machines, I think. Quietest place I've ever been. Freaky, yes!

I'm thinking more of natural places. I remember being above the tree line in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, decades ago. It was amazingly quiet. Couldn't hear a bird, no buzzing of insects, no wind noise. Just completely still and silent. I just sat on a big rock listening to the silence and watched a completely still mountain side. I have no idea how long I sat there.

The referenced study just made me think about it.

I stopped at a gas station in the middle of nowhere in Utah once. I pull in blaring music, and then I shut the car off and it was like I was in another world. I was the only customer there, and my footsteps were like canon shots, it was so quiet. It was the strangest sensation.

Back in the 90's, I was in the mountains of Bolivia around 12k feet, I could have had the boom 10 feet away w/o serious issue.

My vote, within my limited travel, is the desert southwest in California north of Yuma. Where we vacation there, it will be unnaturally quiet, then the Blue Angels will do a flyover at about a thousand feet. Wow! Then, back to silence.
