Quicktime reference.. Hmm.. and AE

Ok this question is kind of a few questions. What is quicktime reference all about? And does it make just a link to the actual project so you can open the reference in AE or something else to do more edits that your limited from avid and then go back to avid and the edits are there? I would doubt that is true but someone help me out.

And if its not true which i dont think it is... then say you have a whole project and just a peice you want to key out green screen or maybe something to do with after effects. would you export just the little peice into ae and edit then bring it back? or export the whole timeline? or what would be the best way to do this? Thanks!

First of all that is exactly what I use the QT reference for. It makes a link to the project so you can edit it in other programs and then take it back into avid. All long as you have it on your computer where it can link to the files it acts just like a regular QT.

If you want to take just a piece of one of your projects just mark in and mark out what you want. When you go to export it make sure you have "Use Marks" selected and it will only take the stuff you have marked.

QT reference, references the file (or files on the timeline) as they exist in XPro. When exporting in XPro 4.01 or 4.1.1 you need to check "square" if you want non-square. After you do your thing, you need to render your comp in AE before importing it back into XPro. I use QT animation, some use the Avid DV codec. Whatever you use choose Best Quality, Full Resolution, Lower Fields first.

Re: Quicktime reference.. Hmm.. and AE

Im still very confused about this. So say i have a project and a 2 minutes of it i need to put in after effects for whatever reason. I export it as a Quicktime reference (just what i need) i open that QT Ref file in ae and start doing what i need to do to it, what name do i render the AE project as in order to open avid and have the changes already there? Or do i have to render whatever in AE to another name and go to avid and import that other quicktime file and replace it with the marked in and out sections i took out as a quicktime reference? Cause if so, then its useless to me cause you can do the same thing just doing it as a quicktime file. I just need to know how will rendering it in AE fix that or whatever? say i have 2 video tracks on Avid and the top is color correction and the bottom is video, if i export all those tracks in a QT reference will it show those seperate tracks in ae? or can i edit the track in ae and go back to avid and still have all the tracks so i can maybe change some coloring later or whatever? Hope you guys understand what im trying to ask. Thanks!

1."what name do i render the AE project as in order to open avid and have the changes already there?"
You can't do this without a third party plug-in. Check out Automatic Duck.
2."Cause if so, then its useless to me cause you can do the same thing just doing it as a quicktime file."
Except by using a QT ref you are saving the time of a render (QT refs take almost no time at all) and the quality hit you would take rendering as a QT animation. There is no loss in a QT ref.
3. " if i export all those tracks in a QT reference will it show those seperate tracks in ae?"
No you need Automatic Duck for that.
4. "can i edit the track in ae and go back to avid and still have all the tracks so i can maybe change some coloring later or whatever?"
No. Automatic Duck again.

Re: Quicktime reference.. Hmm.. and AE

Does anyone here use Automatic Duck and can tell me exactly how reliable it is and if its really good? (at what its supposed to do)

Re: Quicktime reference.. Hmm.. and AE

Automatic Duck works quite well for this process but I do not htink that the current versions supports 24 frame project types. Please refer to the Automatic Duck website for more information.

Re: Quicktime reference.. Hmm.. and AE

it takes avid projects into AE so you don't have to export anything. Pretty neat ans Wes is a pretty cool dude so hit wesplate.com when ya get a chance for cool tips and even a look at who is on the Avid L.
As for a a QT reference goes, it keeps you from having to export anything from avid which cuts down on compression, resolution, codec and field dominance issues. It accesses the raw data you digitized... just references it.
It's not even a clone... it's using the original data.

Re: Quicktime reference.. Hmm.. and AE

but i wish i could do the same thing BACK to avid with AE... i need automatic duck. thats it. Thanx grinner, glad to see you here also!
