Quicktime 7?

So, I'm starting to plan on delivery of my "Zombie Flick", and I just got so Impressed with the new H267 codec, I would really want to use it for submission. Not only because of quality, but because of filesize. I'm not sure I have enough bandwidth to handle a 35Mb upload in less than 70 hours ... :)

My inicial tests held such amazing results I'd love to display my entry with this compression. The question is, is it allowed? Is there some rule about it, or i'll just pay the price for uploading a less popular format (less people will vote for it)? Is there anybody that would like to submit in the new format as well? Maybe we could organize something. Could we submit more than a version of the same film, so there is not a problem with seeing them all? Maybe the contest will provide convertions for a universal displaying format?

Am I the only one concerned about this? (as usual?) ;)

PS: That is it. If I win I'm going to force Jarred to give us the winking smile back. It's being tough living without it!
 
Are they up to H267 already? I'm still on H264. :evil: You can submit any MOV or AVI codec you want, but you have to realize that not everyone's upgraded their players yet. So there's a risk that some people will just skip your film. On the other hand--packing as much quality as possible into your 35MB file is a good thing. I'd lean towards using the new codec and making yourself look as good as possible. We won't be doing any conversions--just hosting the files. Starting with this DVXFest, we're only allowing one version per film.
 
What about an mpeg4 file? Does that count as quicktime, becuase it was under quicktime conversion. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to export from FCP and keep it under 35mb for a 5min movie. Any codec suggestions?

DON'T RENDER IN QUICKTIME 7.

Apple hasn't released QT 7 for Windows yet, and you can't even buy the Public Preview if your billing address is not in the US. I am sure quite a few users are like me: I have QT 6 Pro for Windows, but to upgrade to QT 7 I would lose the 'Pro' functionality until the product is officially released and available outside of the USA.

It's just asking for a favor, but think of it this way: If you render in QT 7, you are for sure not going to get my vote, because I won't be able to play your entry.

That is all I wanted to know. If Quicktime 7 is not yet a multiplataform solution, then I'll definately scrap it!

QT7 is out for Windows, but yeah it will force you to re-buy the pro version unfortunately.

To make sure everyone can view my film, I'll be posting it as a giant animated gif. :)
 
QT7 for windows has been out for a while. The player is free and if you want to encode in h.264 you have to buy the pro version for $29.95 I believe. But anyone can download the MAC or PC version of QT7 player for free.
WMV9 may be a more compatible compression choice though...

...which would mean the loss of use of (already paid) QT 6 Pro. And, as stated, you CAN'T buy QT7 Pro for Windows (Public Preview) if your billing address is not in the US. Believe me, I tried. QT6 Pro and QT7 Player cannot coexist.

In Apple Canada it's not even on the menu of available downloads.

Bottom line: I won't be installing QT7, player or pro, until the GA version comes out. If you encode with it, I won't see it.
 
Just so everyone understands--there will be NO voting for future DVXFests. Viewers will be RATING films on a numeric scale. So fewer viewers (within reason) will not affect how well you do. I continue to recommend that everyone use the best codec possible and that viewers download the QT7 player for windows so they can watch films encoded with the H.264 codec.

Jerry I sympathize, but can't you remove QT 6 Pro and install the QT7 player and then reinstall the QT6 Pro player after viewing the fest? Even if that's not possible, perhaps you can find another computer to view the DVXFest films.
 
Will QT7 give a smaller file size with better quality than QT6? My feature is @ 4:55 and the file is 35.123mb. So damn close!

I don't want to compress any more. I'm tweaking my credits and lower the sound quality to squeek by.

In a word--yes. QT 7 includes the H.264 codec that brings QT into line with the quality of the Windows Media codec. More bang for your buck, so you should be able to compress to a smaller file and have better quality.
 
I have Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus and have made my movie in AVI using the DIVX codec that comes with the program . It is the only codec that will shrink my movie to 34 MB . I tried Windows Encoder 9 ..No way will it even come close ..If I steam ,it will shrink to 24 mb but the quality is really bad and that is at 285kb /320x240 .
Right now I'm expermenting in creating an AVi thru Studio and importing to Ulead and then create a wmv file . it did shrink it just a little too much as it lost some quality , so at the moment I'm trying just a little larger file and see what happens .
To note My AVI file /DIVX will not play in Quick time . not even sure it will play in everyone elses Media Player .
I do think the VLC program maybe a must . I have heard good things about it and it plays DIVX as well !!.

Well... VLC works for some, doesn't work for others. Specificaly with H.264, I've had trouble with sound.

I'll try Barry's idea (uninstall-install-reinstall. I can't do that at work, so have to wait for the weekend), but another possibility is that one of you US-based guys buys the QT7 Pro for Windows keys for me and I Paypal you the money or send you a check. Anyone? If you're willing to help me out, send me a PM.

Barry, I remember you mentioned in one of these threads that only one format per entry is allowed. Does that apply to uploads only? Are we allowed to enter with privately hosted files? If I host the files, am I still allowed to pick only one format? My hosting package has pretty good bandwidth, and I can do streaming wmv, so I could probably host both. I think I can get a better quality with WMV, but for Mac user who don't have a WM player, I could post a QT6 file as well.

Forgive me if there is an answer to this somewhere already... there has been so much activity in these threads, I am starting to lose track... :shocked:

Wow, I've rendered my 5 minutes through Vegas, first to a locked AVI file with inserted 2-3-3-2 pulldown (shot 24PA), then out to a WMV9 file ... I've got 640x480 res (just a test, I'll do 16:9 res. for my submission) at 1MB/second, and I'm at about 37MB ... shouldn't take much to squeeze it to 35MB.

XCHECK's got a good question ... if we can host our own file, as long as it's under the 5 minutes, etc., then I could post both versions as well (QT6 & WMV9) ... then again, if we could host ours, then we could probably go over the 35MB too, so I'm guessing it's not an option so that everyone plays by the same rules.
 
Sorry blokes. The way the new system is set up allows for only one file submitted and they all get uploaded to our server. We need to keep things simple and consistent.
