Re: Quickstream DV review

Following up on Barry's question and Jarred's response, does anyone have the Quickstream working 100% fine with Vegas 4? Thanks.

Re: Quickstream DV review

everything but 24pa works fine, some advanced AVI clips work some dont.. well they work but vegas doesnt build the peaks for the audio, you need to export the clip then bring it back in again to get the peaks. I already talked to Sony about it and they are working on the bug. Short clips work fine with advanced pulldown and clips that are encoded 24pa Quicktime format on the Quickstream.

Thanks Jarred - that's just the answer i needed for me to decide to get a Quickstream ;D

Re: Quickstream DV review

yeah.. I really like my homeade little mount on it now, I dont think it will ever leave the camera now :)

Re: Quickstream DV review

Hey has anybody here used or tried to use some sort of subnotebook like the very little Vaio or Fujitsu etc. models (smaller than DIN-A4) for on location DV recording?! :-)
I mean.. if you have one already or use/need it for other stuff, why not for this too. They all have firewire in and most of the newer ones have cool WXGA resolutions (1280 x 768) ... and notebook HDs are now available with 80GB max!
So you could even use it to real time monitor what your record even with aspect ratio corrections (for all sorts of anamorphic adapters etc.) or matting.
Or is there any downside/pitfall I didn't consider?!

Cheers,

Re: Quickstream DV review

..the downside of using a laptop/notebook, are that its too big to mount to the cam, for steadycam type stuff.. (some notebooks may be just small enough) , and usually (not all the time..pending software your using to monitor/capture)theres about a 1 or more sec delay between what the camera is looking at till it gets displayed on the computer screen, so you dont want to use it as a monitor to run the cam off when there will be any camera movement. other than that it works great. you can do some edits in the field, and keep your script, and storyboards, and all sorts of stuff rught there with you.. its nice to have in the field whether you use it to monitor or capture anyway.

Re: Quickstream DV review

You're right about the delay of course.. though I doubt it would be really a full sec with modern notebooks. Of course it's not camera mountable. :-)
But for non-steadycam/non-heavy movement stuff I think it would be nice... I'm just looking into a 10" WXGA subnotebook with a 80GB HD - weights only about 1,3kg.

Re: Quickstream DV review

..well, again the delay time all pends on the hardware/software your using to monitor or capture, but even my nasty boy p4 editing station gets a delay when capturing of about 1/2 sec, and its enough to make your camera work lag behind if your doing moving shots and working off the pc moitor window alone. like if the cam were on a crane or steadycam, orsomthing with alot of follow type movement to be done, but on a steadycam (or whenever else possible), you could always use the dvx lcd to monitor your composition, and movement. ive been looking at different laptops for a while now to use in the fieild, and have decided on a 16:9 wide screen large model, so that its usefull for editing and other varios tasks. although it weighs alot more, and is larger, i dont really care about the weight, and i want to be able to use it easily instead of hunting and pecking out keys, and whatnot for other uses, but editing is mostly mouse work for me anyway, so perhaps ill have to get a little companion notebook, and then wirless network them together, and have the little notbook attached to the dvx, and do the editing + storage on the larger machine.. someone also posted a link to a cool little pocket sized fully functional xp pc a while ago with firewire in, and ive been looking ito somthing like that as well. but cost is probably going to be a negative factor towards a solution like that over the quickstream. the quickstream is definitely a nice thing to have for moving camera work. and then just dump to the laptop to see what you got or edit. and use the laptop direct when you can
